“Super Location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 15, 2013

The Merritt House was a great location while staying in Monterey as we could walk to old town and the wharf. The room was cozy, clean and comfortable, but the additional parking fee seemed unreasonable especially since only two or three of the designated parking spots were really accessible. Breakfast is definitely a thing to miss; better to take a short walk to old town to find real food. The staff is hit or miss on the friendliness scale.

The hotel was comfortable, friendly, clean, warm and well located for pedestrian precinct walk to waterfront (via micro-brewery, also well worth a visit). Good value for the area and it has good parking as well.

I like the room and location of the hotel very much. The room is clean and the interior is cozy. The hotel is about 10min walk to the old fishermans wharf, so it really convenient to walk around. The private parking lot is crowded, and there will be and $15 parking fee added to the total when I booked the room, but I managed to found a street parking space just beside the hotel and got refunded when I checked in with no hassle. I would recommend Merritt House Inn for its reasonable price among others.

My husband and I stayed at the Merritt House as a base for exploring Monterey and Highway One and what a wonderful experience it was! We had the suite - which was the full floor of the original historic adobe house - and it was beautiful and spacious, from a beautiful living room to a huge bedroom to a lovely bathroom, a front porch that looks out to the decades old flowering garden and the Main Street beyond to the large terrace at the back ( which was a great location to catch some sun and down a few vintage Californian beers). Being centrally located, one could walk to all shops and amazing restaurants, including Fisherman's Wharf and Cannery Row. Certainly wished we could stay longer than the 2 nights. Breakfast buffet was a cold but hearty continental spread. Definitely make the House your place of choice when in Monterey and book one of the suites - it's well worth it, especially if you are lucky to get the second full floor of the beautiful historical adobe.

My husband and I stayed at the Merritt House last week for two nights as a base for exploring Monterey and Highway One. We booked the suite and had the entire second floor of the original house! What a place! From the beautifully restored living room to the bedroom to the beautiful bathroom to the verandah outside to the huge terrace at the back (which was an ideal place to get some sun and down a few vintage California beers), it was truly amazing and we certainly wished we had more time on hand so as to prolong our stay. Merritt House is a historical property and a charming adobe structure and the gardens were very well-kept, with decades old trees and flowering plants adorning the gardens. The location is superb as well as it is right in the middle of town, within walking distance of all shops and amazing restaurants, including the Fisherman's Wharf. Only downside is the cold continental buffet breakfast (as I like a warm breakfast) but it is complimentary and certainly of a hearty size. Highly recommend a stay at the House and great yourselves by booking one of the three suites (of course, the one on the second floor is the best of the best)!

While you might not be staying in the actual historic house, we were lucky enough to get one of the rooms for our group upgraded to a room with a separate parlor in addition to the bedroom, in the addition to the historic house, at the rear. Nicely furnished in an Early California mode, with a lot of great atmosphere. I felt like I was staying in the 1830s as done 1920's style. Very comfortable, and very comfortable bed as well, with LOTS of kushy pillows. Great parlor for socializing, and a terrace between our rooms where we could wander back and forth. This upgrade was wonderful and thoughtful! The site is in the heart of the historic district, which makes it very handy to the adobes, custom house, the wharf. Wonderfully plantings in the gardens around the buildings that give an almost tropical feel.

Breakfast is not very inspiring, just muffins, cold cereal, etc. But that's fine if you just want a continental breakfast. However, get there early, as the seating is not enough for the number of guests. Coffee pot in the room, to get you through before heading off to the breakfast room, with locally-roasted coffee supplied.

This is a nice little Inn with a lovely courtyard. We stayed in room 20, which is upstairs with only one neighbor. It is a little dated but I expected that based on the age of the Inn. Coffee supplies in the room were always stocked. Shower was good and hot. The breakfast is muffins, bagels, fruit and cereal. It had a little fridge in the room as well. Friendly staff. I would stay here again.
