Our visit was a while back, but I just remembered it while crusing the Tripadvisor site and thought I would warn you. This place was lousy. I'm an easy going guy, and not terribly hard to please, as you can see in my other reviews, but this was an exception. The main complaint was the attitude of the desk clerk, a Hispanic fellow. It seemed like we were really annoying him just by being there to check in. I mean he was openly nasty. If we weren't so tired I would have left. As the others have said, the rooms were shabby and a little nasty. On the plus side, it's not too far from the Cannery and all, and it's not too expensive, but even so, it's not worth it. I don't need to pay to be abused.

We stayed at the Otter Inn for two nights. Not a first class hotel, but the rooms were very clean and the staff was very helpful and friendly. My one complaint would be the noise coming from adjacent rooms when someone took a shower. The location and price were perfect. I would recommend this hotel to anyone who is looking for a clean hotel that is within walking distance to all the sites.

We had two rooms for two nights, but one night was bad enough. We left even though we couldn't get a refund for the next night. The plumbing in the walls was so loud we were awake at 4 AM while early risers took their showers. The drapes were hanging partially off the rods, and there were unidentified rustling noises during the night. A trashcan under the sink plumbing didn't do much for the ambiance either. I don't like to waste money, but you couldn't pay me to stay another night here!

One thing about Monterey hotels, nothing is cheap. So what would be cheap outside of the city is pricy here, what is really nice here is really expensive, there is no in-between! Anyways, this is a clean place to stay (I was taking scuba classes) and a good price for Monterey. Room (double) was good, clean linens, bathroom was okay (shower head was not so good, I'm a tall guy), staff at front desk was nice, parking available and it is close to everything. You'll spend most of your time outside your hotel room, so if you just need a clean place to sleep, this is it. If you are looking for something nice consider a B&B.

“It's falling apart!”

The plumbing was bad. The ceiling above our shower was on the verge of bursting open because a drain pipe from the shower above us was leaking badly. The pipes in the walls made loud godawful sounds at all hours of the night when people ran water. It was loud enough to startle us awake.

You can hear every footstep of the people above you, no matter how lightly they walk. The refrigerator froze our sodas and we had to take them out and not use it because the dial to adjust the temperature was broken.

The inspection permit on the elevator expired in March 2007.

The location is great because it is right across from Cannery Row and you can see the bay from MOST but not all rooms. The traffic noise is noticeable during the day but it gets quiet enough at night.

The hot tub looked clean and in good repair but it's not sitting in a very appealing area.
