“Unique--Great location to walk to bars/restaraunts”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 22, 2014

This hotel is charming and different than the others in the area. It is a great choice if you want to be walk out to bars and restaurants or the water, which is what we wanted. I wish it had A/C in the rooms and a working elevator, but if you can deal with those two things then it's a great choice. It really is a great choice for many, but it won't work for everyone (if you can't walk up 3-4 flights of stairs easily it's not for you). Overall, we enjoyed our stay and I would definitely stay here again.

Pros
* Unique and charming, doesn't feel like a typical hotel
* Comfortable beds and very nice decor
* You can walk right out the door to bars/restaurants/shopping
* Close to the water
* Free trolley takes you to Cannery Row
* We could see the ocean from our room

Cons
* No A/C - this means you have to leave the windows open (if it's warm) and listen to a lot of street noise and tons of seagulls. Yes you expect them since it's by the water, but you will hear them all day and all night--and they are loud.

* No elevator. We stayed on the 4th floor and loved our king suite, but the walk up the stairs started to wear on us. This hotel will not work for the elderly or people with certain disabilities.

This is such a cool little hotel, its old and has so much character, the rooms are small but they are really nice, if you like the victorian style this is for you. Everyone is super nice and the location is perfect. There is tons of restaurants and bars on that same street. This place is very clean, and colorful. I would stay here again for sure. Value is great. (half as much and another hotel in that area)

Room Tip: Stay on the second floor the elevator doesn't work.

PROS: great location--short walking distance to wharf, close to cafes, restaurants, Starbucks, Walgreens..to name a few. Clean & well-maintained, and nicely decorated with old Victorian furniture--especially for a 100+ year old hotel. Decent-sized King room, clean bathroom. Friendly, helpful staff. Complimentary continental breakfast that serves the basics--not a big selection, but decent for someone who doesn't need a big breakfast.
CONS: No working elevator--walking up the 4 floor wasn't all that bad. Water in shower kept on alternating with very hot & very cold water. Wi-Fi not working in later afternoon time each day--but it's free!
OVERALL: Nice clean hotel in a good locations..would return..

This is a lovely old hotel in the centre of Monteray close to the wharf. Staff were friendly, breakfast good, rooms and public areas very clean. Our room (a double) was on the small side but was fine for our needs.
Two important points: there is no lift here so if you dont like the idea of climbing some stairs, or are unable to, then be warned. Luckily we were on the 2nd floor so this wasnt a problem.
Secondly, the building is old and has relatively thin walls so you'll get a set of earplugs in your room. We didnt find this very problematic, one of our neighbours was a bit loud in the mornings, but there were little to no disturbances for us (with a room at the back of the building) beside this.
We would stay here again.

The hotel is in an old building with appropriate furniture and interior. It was clean and all hallways and the room feature nice crown molding. Overall the building seems well maintained, the staff is friendly, the room had a decent size (what more do you need), and the breakfast was surprising plentiful for an American hotel. You certainly can not beat the location so close to fisherman's wharf, plenty of restaurants all around, and even the Aquarium not too far away if you are a good walker.
The minusses are related to the location. There is no parking at the hotel but at least a few clear spaces for checking in and out. We parked in a nearby garage for $7 all day, which is fine for such a central location. I wonder how much the guests in the nearby Hilton had to pay. The other problem is the noise from the street. Be aware that the bar next door closes at 2 am on Friday and Saturday night and prepare yourself to join the party. Else it could be difficult to get any sleep.

Room Tip: Ask for a room not facing the street

we just pulled up outside, and asked for a room. Very welcoming staff particularly the doorman who was dressed like Charlie Chaplin and spoke in an English accent! He also carried our cases up 3 flights of stairs, and for a small fee valet parked our car.

It was in a lovely location, very clean, comfortable room, and a nice breakfast.
