Had lunch here.
After mooching through Cannery Row and seeing the hectic and crowded tourist restaurants decided to enter the peace and calm of the Intercontinental for lunch. No problem getting a waterside table. Mrs P chose fish & chips, I had a hamburger.
Mrs P liked her Ling Cod which came in two narrow portions with light crispy batter. My steak burger cooked medium was excellent as were the chips (fries). Also came with a pot of chef’s ‘ketchup’ which was brown – waiter explained it was tomato based with some chillies, Mexican dark chocolate and apple juice. I guess it was the last ingredient that made it so sweet I’d like to try it on vanilla ice-cream.
Torn about wine choice from a good list; the waiter poured as a taste of Sauvignon Blanc we were considering and then we decided to go for a Napa sparkling wine.
We were unhappy with it when poured; luckily the beverage manager was in the restaurant and he immediately confirmed it was corked. He called for a replacement bottle and when we compared the new bottle with the old it was very obvious the first was faulty. He gave us an interesting explanation of the problem of TCA (corkiness) and urged that we should always reject any wine that we are unhappy with. He said that if there was nothing wrong with a wine a diner rejected he’d drink it himself and that he wanted diners to enjoy their time in the restaurant which they couldn’t do if they were not happy with their wine.
All in all, a restful and enjoyable place to have lunch, with attentive professional service and a great view over Monterey Bay.
