Truly nothing but exceptional small bistro. No pretense. A small non-descript store front, several blocks below traditional tourist restaurants.
3 small rooms, actually one is a larger room with chest high divider which adds to intimacy of room rather then just a large room.
What a pleasure to have a waitress who was professional, knowledgeable of the menu and the wine list.
We started with the escargot and jamon apps. Escargot where well above typical snails in garlic butter. The Jamon speaks for itself but what a wonderful cheese and olives also.
My wife had the Coq Au Vin, was incredible. Several entree specials were offered, don't recall all but was a fresh local fish and the dish I ordered, a brace of quail. God the quail were good. Browned perfectly, served with a bordeaux wine reduction. I don't get quail often, I tend to find it generally is nothing special but after the outstanding appetizers I decided to try it since it was a special. One of the best entrees I have ever had in 40 yrs of dining. We also had to have the Pommes Frites since in a ' bistro '.
This small restaurant has an outstanding wine list. 11 well chose wines by the glass, approx 25 1/2's and 125 or so full bottles. The full bottles are heavy on bordeaux, burgundy and rhone. There is still a nice selection of domestic. We started with glasses of red graves and a nice spatlese resiling. Dinner we had a 07' Cht du Pape, Les Cederes.
Restaurant, food, an ambiance were truly a 10 out of 10. Other diners were quiet and respectful, no cell phones no screaming kids. I would highly recommend this restaurant if in staying in Carmel or Monterey. We were staying in Carmel but was not more then 15-20 min drive to restaurant. Our second night ate a highly recommended restaurant in Carmel that was fine but both wished we had come back to Bistro Moulin again.
