“A lovely stay in Monterey”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 25, 2013

Making the drive down the big Sur is a much more enjoyable trip stopping off at Hyatt Regency Monterey. A dog friendly golfing resort, with beautiful vistas across the landscape, one would be silly to miss. Great service, modem rooms & a lovely restaurant.

We stayed here for our wedding night and it was wonderful. When we checked in we got a room upgrade to a golf course view....very nice. We decided to do the Regency Club and we are glad we did! The breakfast was very good. The munchie hour between 5-730 was great.....lots of choices! The dessert hour was....well included a 3 layer chocolate cake....need I say more? There is complimentary soda, juice, any kind of coffee you can imagine, tea, hot chocolate, v-8 and water for you to take back to your room or enjoy there. The fire pit they light at night was cool, ping pong fun and the Jacuzzi very nice. Comfortable bed, clean room and friendly staff!! Thank you Hyatt Regency Monterey for a wonderful stay!!!

Room Tip: I would get a room on the top floor because you can hear everyone above you. I would pay the extra...

The Hyatt in Monterey is a great place to stay to explore the area around Monterey/Carmel/Hwy 1. It is not right in the bustle of Monterey down near Cannery Row but I consider that a good thing because it is a quiet place to go after exploring that area - it is a fairly quick drive. It is not a boutique hotel in the heart of Carmel - but it isn't priced that way either saving money to spend in the shops or for great dinners. It is very comfortable. While the buildings have clearly been there for a while, the interior of the rooms have been redone recently and are very modern, clean and comfortable. Rooms with a view of the golf course are quieter and are very peaceful in the mornings and evenings. The staff at the Hyatt is top notch - everyone was eager to help. The breakfast buffet (which was included in our package) was a great way to start the day. We also ate room service which was good with a good menu (I recommend the fish tacos).

The one downside was that, with the room remodel, most of the rooms do not have a tub - only a large shower. That was nice but I miss the option of a tub and it is an unfortunate trend as hotels do remodels that they are being removed.

Overall, our stay was just prior to the 4th of July (yes, I'm behind on my reviews) and we wish we had planned to stay a few days longer. We will definitely be back.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the golf course are very peaceful and it is fun to watch the golfers.

I have to admit, I had some apprehension over this property after reading reviews and hearing first-hand experiences from former guests, but I was pleasantly surprised by my experience while attending a week-long conference.

First impressions were mixed as the property is VERY large and not well marked. There was not clear signage as to where the hotel lobby is and I ended up at the far end of the complex. Luckily there was an employee in the area that was able to direct me to the lobby. Check-in was efficient and the desk staff was very nice and helpful. Again, this property is quite large and there are several buildings located on the campus, so finding the building your room is in could be a bit of a challenge. Again, there were plenty of employees roaming around outside who were very helpful in providing guidance on where to find your building. This was at 1:00 p.m. in the afternoon, thankfully. It would be tough to wander around at night as the buildings are not very well marked.

The room I stayed in was large, well appointed and clean with the exception of the large black stain on the carpet. It wasn't a deal breaker and the rest of the room was fairly clean. There was a large closet with a cubby type of shelf that was more than adequate for multiple pairs of shoes, books, luggage, etc. There were also several hangers, which I love because I like to hang everything. The bathroom was also large with plenty of counter space to store toiletries. The shower was huge, but there was not a bathtub. The amenties were your standard faire and just fine for a multiple night stay. There were plenty of towels and washcloths, not to mention extra blankets and pillows if you need it.

The hotel bar and restaurants were good and the service was friendly. We had some of the best service I have experienced by our waiter at TusCa. Amazing service and great food. Room service was fast and the food was very good.

The conference center was nice and spacious however the cell and web access on the lower floor of the Regency Conference Center was very poor. I have both an AT&T and Verizon cell phones and both did not work well. Phone calls & web service were patchy.

The banquet food was ok but the staff - not so good. Early morning breakfasts were met with non-responsive wait staff in varying degrees of discord. These servers appear to hate their jobs. No smiles, no "Good Morning" even after being pleasantly addressed - just, well, nothing. God forbid you want more than a single cup of coffee. It just felt like they wanted you to hurry up and get out. Not very hospitable at all. I even saw two employees squabbling in the foyer right out there in front of the guests. Lunch with the banquet staff was more of the same. Few smiles, repeated requests for coffee or iced tea. We finally just got up and got our own pitchers of water and iced tea and were admonished by the server for doing so. We only had about 45 minutes and didn't want to spend most of it chasing down beverages.

The breakout rooms were VERY small. We were lucky to be in the Oaktree room where there were glass doors that led out to the patio, but the general comment from others at the conference were dismayed at the interior breakouts that were small and lacked natural light.

Would I book another event here? Probably. It is a solid property with lots to offer groups. There is plenty of flexible meeting space and the hotel staff is very nice and accommodating. The only reservation I would have is the banquet staff. It would definately be a point of discussion if I were to consider this property for future meetings/conferences.

I stayed in the hotel for a conference. Staff were very friendly and helpful and room is nice too. However, they charged resort fee $22/night and it is even worse that you had pay the use of business center which is normaly free everywhere else.

Dear Bin S,

Thank you for taking a moment to share feedback about your recent visit. I am pleased to hear you enjoyed your room and I love hearing our friendly staff complimented. I will be sure to pass your words along to my staff. I apologize for the confusion surrounding the resort fee. This fee includes amenities such as WiFi, valet and self-parking, transportation to the airport, etc. that many hotels charge separately for. I hope we have the opportunity to welcome you back to the hotel in the future.

All the best,
Steve

The hotel looks very decent. Rooms are located in isolated buildings near the head building.
There is a golf course directly behind the hotel.
Rooms are spacious and clean. Bathroom clean and very large.
There is some noise from the highway that is close to the hotel, but the most noise comes from the refridgerator in the room! So we turned that off.
