This is worth a stop and a picture or two, even if you're not staying in the associated hostel. You won't spend the time touring it that you would at Pigeon Point Lighthouse some miles down the coast, but it's a pretty place.
That is, if you can find it! It's hardly marked at all on Route 1, and the best way to locate it is to look for the street sign for 16th St. on the east side of Route 1 in the tiny town of Montara, and then drive up the unlikely looking entrance drive across the road (leading through an ominous-appearing gated wire fence), where you'll find a few visitor parking spots. If you intend to wander the grounds, you need to check in at the office.
It is advisable not to try to turn into the entrance from the south, particularly at times that Route 1 is busy. (The folks running the place warn about this.) If you're approaching from the south, make a note of the location of the entrance, drive a bit north until you find a safe turnaround, and approach from that direction.
