“Doubletree Modesto”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 11, 2007

We stayed at the Doubletree Hotel this past weekend. This hotel is probably the best you will find in Modesto. However, Modesto does not have much hotel choices to offer!

We stayed in a corner Junior Suite Room. It is a pretty good size. Beds were comfortable.

Downstairs bar was friendly and drinks were good. There are better bars and restaurants within walking distance though.

The biggest disappointment was the lack of available taxis. The concierge and the front desk were not able to help out much with this either.

Modesto definately lacks good taxi service.

Besides this, Doubletree is definately the best place to stay in Modesto.

The Doubletree is the main downtown hotel in Modesto, a high-rise in the modern area of downtown. It is a fine, modern, well appointed hotel with very good rooms. It is one of the predominant buildings in downtown Modesto.

The nearby (1-2 blocks away) nighttime trains mentioned by other reviewers are certainly a factor if you stay on the side of the hotel nearest to them. I did and found that I needed the earplugs that I had brought along. My companions had a room on the other side of the hotel and barely heard any noise.

Worth mentioning is that most of the other traveler-hotel chains have modern hotels along Highway 99 in the 10 or so miles north and south of Modesto. Thus, while I think the Doubletree is fine, there are plenty of other choices nearby.

This is a high-rise hotel in downtown Modesto, on highway 132, just a few blocks from Highway 99.

Rooms are clean and beds are very comfortable, with scads of pillows. Amenities are of high quality (Neutrogena). Oddly, there was an iron and ironing board in the room, but no hair dryer. Windows did not open in my ninth floor room. You can not use the stairs to get to the lobby or between floors; only exit from the stairwells is onto the street through an alarmed door. Some of the details on the building (like ceiling tiles) are showing their age but in general the hotel is well maintained.

There is a charge for internet access on your laptop but there is a business center on the second floor, accessible with your key card, with free computers to use.

The gym is well equipped with a wide choice of cardio machines, a water fountain, scale, towels, and a weight machine. There is an outside pool on the roof of the first floor, accessible from the second floor.

The restaurant is OK. Breakfast buffet costs about ten dollars and features only scrambled eggs, sausage and bacon, breads, cereals, and fruit.

Valet parking is available on site. Otherwise you park in a city lot across the street. Get your ticket validated at the front desk, although when I was there the exit gates on the city lot were open and no one had to pay. There are a few restaurants and a big movie theater within walking distance. The new Gallo performing arts center is a couple of blocks away.

Staff were friendly and helpful.

I have stayed at the Doubletree in Modesto on business about a half a dozen times over the last 3-4 months. The reviews that state that the Doubletree is the only real option in town are dead on. There's not much else in Modesto worth choosing. That having been said, make certain that they always give you a room on the even numbered side of the hotel. The rooms on the odd numbered side overlook the rail station. Trains come through all night long and blast their horns as they (slowly) rumble through the yard. I stayed on that side one time and didn't sleep a wink. Also, if you can swing the cost always opt for a corner room. It's more expensive but about two times as large as the other rooms. Perfect if you're working in your room. Finally, make sure you don't get a room with a doorway to the adjoining room. The doors are paper thin. I could hear the guy breathing in the adjoining room like he was in bed with me. But if you get a corner room, on the even numbered side and without a door to the adjoining room, you'll have a very pleasant stay. The staff are friendly and polite and do try very hard to make your stay a good one. The facilities are very nice and the beds are comfortable. For Modesto this is the Ritz-Carlton.

We stay at Doubletree two or three times a year. We were born and raised in Modesto but moved away 35 years ago and return for family events. We have stayed in 4 other places but this is the best Modesto has. You are not in a metropolitan area...you are in the farm belt! They are in the process of remodeling and the rooms should be really nice when done. We stayed in a corner suite overlooking the railway on the sixth floor. We liked the room...big and clean. The room service breakfast was very good. The closet door did get stuck but was easily dealt with. I had a bed and breakfast for 10 years so am more fussy than most about cleanliness and bedding. I give the hotel a passing grade because it is as I said...as good as it gets here.

Hilton Hotels needs to take a look at their property. This hotel hasn't been updated in a LONG, LONG time ( my guess is at least 20 years). The doors in the rooms would not work ( no latch on the bathroom door and could not open closet as it was broken). The carpeting is badly worn (taped with duct tape in many locations) and filthy dirty. The halls reeked of cigarette smoke. The tile in the bath was dirty. The carpet had not been vacuumed in the room and debris from previous guest was still present. I found a cockroach in the bathroom in the middle of the night. The maid did not even pick up dirty dishes from the previous day. This hotel needs a SERIOUS remodel and totally new management. When my wife and I were eating breakfast, the entire restaurant staff (waiters, busboys, and manager) sat down in the restaurant at a nearby table to share a snack during their break while we ate. The girl at the front desk gave the most confusing directions I've ever received to get to the shopping mall. They were totally useless. I know Modesto is a little out of the way but this was a terrible experience and they deserve better, certainly not up to any Doubletree standard. Hilton, please send someone to see what's going on. Certainly NOT worth the price. Frankly I'm surprised at some of the other reviews, they must not have been paying attention. I will NEVER return there.

Stayed a weekend in Feb, 2005 nice big clean room with a nice view of Modesto Center Plaza. The problem is that they charge for everything you do. Just to make a local call you have to pay a one time fee and then 10 cents a minute after your talking, so useing your laptop with dialup is out, they offer a wireless service in your room for 9.99. Once I paid for the service it worked well and was easy to connect. I would stay at the Best Western Townhouse Lodge. nice rooms nice area clean rooms FREE cable DSL pool and spa all for $60.00 not $145.00 not including the internet access of $9.99 at the Double Tree. The Best Western Townhouse Lodge also offers a free breakfast in the morning, I have traveled all over the world and have to say that the Double Tree in Modesto is nice but they need to improve a little as far as customer service and the things they offer. They are a big hotel chain and when a little hotel such as the Towhouse Lodge can offer what they do for the price I will stay at the Townhouse anytime.
