The BBC has been a shadow of it's former self for the last few years, but I'm happy to report that the Beeb is back!! My wife and I just got back from dancing at the Beeb tonight. The band -- D5 -- was great! The seedy, depressing feel that had descended on the place the last few years was gone! The tacky video game consoles were gone. Rumor has it there is a new manager, and you can really tell. The crowd, though still thin compared to the glory days, was enthusiastic and ready to party. I suspect the crowds will increase as the word gets out.
For those of you who haven't heard of the BBC, let me give you a little background. The BBC is a restaurant/pub/club in downtown Menlo Park, California, that has been around probably for decades. The cool thing about the BBC is that it is welcoming to all ages, and is the kind of place that a 30-something or 40-something can go to and not feel old. Several times a week, they have a band, and there is lively dancing. It used to be thee happening spot on the Peninsula, it was absolutely packed, and it was common to see local celebs (e.g. players from the 49ers) hanging out there. But a few years back, for reasons I'm still not sure about, it just collapsed. They stopped having bands, it got seedy, and the feel was all wrong. But happily that now seems to have changed! We certainly plan to go back and do some more dancing, and we hope to see you there!
p.s. Food there is basically pub fare. Humble, basic, burgers & fries and that sort of thing. One thing I liked to do in the glory days was eat upstairs near the railing, looking down on the main section of the pub as the crowds arrived. Then about the time dinner was done, I'd go dance downstairs. Good, clean, inexpensive fun. We didn't eat there tonight, but the thing the table next to us was having looked and smelled pretty good.
