“Wonderful vacation spot”

What a wonderful hotel! The redecorated rooms are fantastic, the pool inviting, and the whole atmosphere condusive to a vacationing spirit. The owners do an excellent job in every way.

We stayed here for one night, as the Menlo Park Inn couldn't accomodate us both nights we were in town. Am I glad that was the case! The Red Cottage Inn was a wonderful surprise, starting from when I called from Santa Cruz Ave in Menlo Park, to see if they had a room available that night. They did (the last one) -- a Queen that, with our AAA discount, was actually $5 cheaper than the Menlo Park Inn.

The first nice thing I noticed was that the Inn was set back a bit from El Camino. There were also flowers and landscapping. The office was a little small but nicely decorated and the person who checked us in very friendly.

The room was slightly smaller than average, but with a tall, slanted white ceiling that made it seem very airy. There was a private balcoy with bistro table that looked out over a pool area. The bathroom had a wondow that opened for ventilation ad fluffy towels.

Amenities also included in-room coffee maker, glass mugs, refrigerator, and free internet acccess. For the money, this is a great value.

Pros: good location (5 or so blocks from downtown Menlo Park), great value, nice rooms, good amenities

Cons: Overlooking the pool in the summer might be noisy

Stayed with my wife on a trip for work. The price was right and the price was also right inline with the accomodations. I think the pictures on the site may be a bit misleading. You should not expect a luxurious and beautiful place at this price and that is what the pictures seem to portray. On the other hand it was peaceful, clean... the staff was pleasant and helpful. That is what you would hope for in any hotel and you will get that here. They were in the middle of a lot of renovations so I hope to see what the place re-done next year. The private patio was a nice place to sit out and have a glass of wine and a snack and a welcome amenity.

I would recommend this hotel for a short stay, if nothing else in your price range is available and if location is important. To be fair, this hotel doesn't pretend to be the Sheraton.

Good points:

-Location.

-Lovely private patio if you are able to access it (see below).

-Relatively inexpensive.

-Friendly staff.

-Late check-in available.

-Continental breakfast was good. Protein selection limited to hard-cooked eggs.

-Complimentary national newspaper (USA Today) and local (Palo Alto) daily paper.

Not-so-good points:

-We asked for a crib for our 3-year old boy and were given a travel playpen for an infant (undersized). When we asked for a larger crib we were told they didn't have any so our son slept curled up in a ball, unable to extend his legs. After four nights we checked out early.

-The sliding glass door to our private patio was non-functioning (the slider was jammed), meaning we were never able to go out to the patio. This was reported early in our 4-day stay but was not repaired (though I think they tried). We were told they are in the process of replacing all the old sliding glass doors so hopefully this will not be an issue in the future.

-Close to train tracks so you can hear every passing train (not extremely loud but audible). Not a bad thing for train-loving kids and adults but may annoy others.

-Thin walls through which you could hear other occupants' TV.

-We were there during a cold snap in April and the old-fashioned gas furnace made loud banging noises all night indicating something wrong with the ignition.

-Pool wasn't clean (admittedly it was raining).

My wife and I stayed here in August 2005. The hotel itself was very pleasant. However, the staff was not well informed.

They were friendly, but they told us that it is enough to reach the airport one hour before to get a flight to Chicago.

We hardly reached that plane, and we have been very angry!

In other words: the hotel is very good, but if you want to get
good information, do not ask!

I staied in Red Cottage Inn during 15 day. The hotel is very quiet, cute and comfortable for very reasonable price. I like an idea with privat patio. Room kept clean. Sufficient breakfast. Qualified service team ( you don't feel there attendance, but you have everything you need - stuff, assistance, etc.)
