Approaching Mendocino from the South, a fleck of Chinese red stands out against the Victorian landscape. A westward stroll along Albion Street brings one to the source, the brilliantly painted red and green Taoist Temple of Kwan Tai. Preserved by the descendants of early Chinese immigrants, the historic Temple provides some of the last surviving evidence of a Chinese community that numbered around 500 at its 19the Century peak. The tiny building itself, is a meticulously restored original structure that houses a combination of original and more recently acquired religious articles. Since its restoration, the Temple has welcomed thousands of North Coast school children who participate in the annual Chinese New Years parade each February. Taoist, or no, it is worth a visit. Pause on the steps overlooking Mendocino Bay to share a moment with your own departed ancestors or light a Joss stick and let your troubles float away on the fragrant smoke.
