“Best breakfast burrito EVER!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 7, 2014

The MacCallum House Inn is one of many really nice places to stay in Mendocino. Even if we didn't end up staying at the inn, we planned on dining there at least one meal of our trip based on their superb online reviews. We happened to stay at the MacCallum House Inn which included full complimentary breakfasts in their restaurant on the first floor. My wife and I both found the breakfast burrito to be the best we'd ever had. It was very unique with homemade sausage and roasted peppers, which gave it a French flavor. We had a choice of three different eating areas; the restaurant with a stone fireplace and rich dark woods, a sun room featuring a full view of Mendocino, and an outdoor patio. We had dinner in the sunroom on our first night in Mendocino. We both chose the Grouper special for the evening. Being from Southern California, grouper is something I've never encountered on a restaurant menu. We both enjoyed our meals and especially the vegetable sides that were cooked perfectly. A cozy bar sits inside from the sunroom and features a fireplace, bar seating, a couple love seats, comfortable chairs and coffee tables. Service was top-notch during our stay, including the check-in clerk, restaurant servers and bartender. MacCallum House Inn is situated one block from Main Street and within easy walking distance from anywhere in Mendocino Village. Other places we dined or would consider dining in Mendocino Village include Cafe Beaujolais, Patterson's Pub, Trillium Cafe and the Mendocino Hotel.

“Nice Physical Enviornment, Average Service”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 2, 2014

MacCallum House is a lovely property and we had been wanting to go there. Unfortunately we hit a night when a wine tour group was dining there. They took up much of the main dining room and made a LOT of noise. Thankfully no other diners were seated in the same room as the group, but their noise spilled right over into the next room. I don't know how often the wine tour groups eat there, but I would check before making a reservation. They don't seem to have a completely separate, closed off room for groups as some places do.
My husband had a delicious Neiman Ranch pork chop that was truly above average.( They did warn us that it would take 26 minutes to prepare.) I had the vegetable-polenta torta and it wasn't all that good. it had a creamy texture like a pot pie and not much flavor.
I think the most frustrating thing was the disinterested attitude of the staff. I had the impression that they cared little about our dining experience and made no effort to compensate us for all the noise. They could have seated us near the bar windows instead of the dining room or at least offered some verbal sympathy or distracting conversation.
I find it very surprising to say that our dining experience at the newly reopened, understaffed Heritage House where the new kitchen is just being completed was far superior to that of the well established MacCallum House. For one thing, the waitress we had at HH was top drawer.
If you are young and love to party, dining with a boisterous bunch of drunks from the wine tour groups may be just the ticket to get you in a celebratory mood. If you want a quiet, romantic dinner, not so much.
If we had been better treated by the staff at MacCallum house I would not have written this review.

“Great value”

Rented the house. Super value, close to everything yet private. Wonderful breakfast included. Not ocean view but everything was just excellent.

“A must if you are in Mendocino”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 21, 2014

At least for dessert, if not for the entire meal. We were lucky enough to eat dinner The Pacific Rim Oysters are so fresh and tasty is like a bite of the Pacific Ocean in your mouth. And the scallops were cooked to perfection, the shrimp and shitake toast that it comes with is out of this world, think of it more of a beignet than toast, so flavorful (then again, how can you go wrong with anything deep fried). For dessert, their house-made caramel and chocolate pistachio bark ice-cream is unbelievable, perfect combination of salty and sweet.

“Disappointing since last visit”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 2, 2014

Last year we very much enjoyed this restaurant. This year, we were disappointed. The service was nonchalant, and the food was overpriced for the quality of the meals that we got. I hope they are able to rectify these issues.
