“This was a fun place to eat and people watch and atmosphere was.....”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 5, 2010

well, fun! This hotel has both a more formal dining room and a bistro. We chose the bistro. We were seated in a Victorian decorated room, having comfortable velvet chairs to sit on and a small round table with flowers on it, to eat off of. We were seated near the front windows, and it proved to be a good people watching space. Service was average, but there was only 1 girl working and she was busting her butt to please everyone. The place is chock full of antiques and interesting paintings, mirrors etc., as well as having a historical explanation of the building/hotel. There is a beautiful bar area, and several locals had taken up their spots by 5 PM. LOL. Listening to their chatter provided some interesting insights.

We both had the Superburgers, which came with fries and a salad. It was great food. Excellent burgers.

“Ate in the Bistro”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 10, 2010

Great food. My superburger was the best I've tasted and my wife's fish and chips were plentiful and tasty. The bartender was extremely busy but extremely efficient, helpful, and polite. We appreciated how hard and fast he was working. He was very knowledgable about the local wines and recommended one that I have since ordered from home. I would recommend coming here for the food, ambience of the local clientele, and atmosphere.

“Exquisite dining experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 11, 2010

The Mendocino Hotel has always been the highlight of our trip to the coast. We anticipate the dinner we will have for months before we go. Chef Drew Ison raises the bar ever higher each time we visit. Oysters Mendocino and his butternut squash ravioli are heaven. Our local host was not feeling well and they did a wonderful "to go" 3 course dinner for her and it was just as delightful.

“Dissapointing, check elsewhere”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed April 18, 2010

Going out for "fancy" breakfasts is our occasional treat. And we just had breakfast here yesterday morning. Boring, simple food, and expensive. I like those memorable "WOW" breakfasts. There were only 3 couples in the garden room and everything took way too long to get. No loose tea, only Stash teabags. Bummer.Great chicken apple sausages though.
Two young, male waiters were nice, but not properly trained in the order of fine dining. The sliced tomato garnish was dried out. Should not have been on our plates, period.

Too many other nice places to check out around here.
We like MacCallum House and Little River Inn Rest. instead.

“Dreadful, the service was even worse than the food.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed September 27, 2009

This is known more correctly as the mendocino Dining Room and Bistro. 4 of us went to eat there with high hopes and we were all disappointed. Its setting is perfect and the décor a bit over the top and definitely faded in parts, was interesting. The tables were all still littered from the plates etc from pervious occupants but we did find a table (no-one there to help us) and it was eventually cleared and menus did eventually arrive. It went downhill from then.
Under the table, just where you have your knees, there was a nail sticking out, this was only discovered after it had abraded a trouser leg. We advised the waiter of this. He said it would be sorted. It certainly wasn’t whilst we were there.
Requests for another olive for the martini was taken but it never arrived. When we went in search of it there was no-one at the bar so we helped ourselves. When the food arrived we still had our menus so we ended up collecting them and finding a place for them to be stored.
The food when it came. After a long wait, was on the whole very poor, with the exception of the steak. The salad which was supposed to have a number of ingredients appeared to consist of one, Chinese cabbage and this was wilted. The prawns on it were tough and the one given to our non meat eater had pieces of chicken in it. The French onion soup was barely Ok…but only barely. A few pieces of uncooked onion in a pale coloured broth was not appetising.
When the waiter came to collect the plates and he asked if how the food was, we said that the salad was poor, his response was “great” and off he walked. With hindsight I don’t think he was being rude or even sarcastic. He simply didn’t care. He was programmed to ask and he had programmed himself to respond.
As we left we asked to speak to the manager. We thought it only right to point out that there were problems, particularly the nail that could actually hurt someone. This request, when we eventually found someone to ask, appeared to cause unease as though there was some confusion over who might be the manager. Eventually he did arrive and to be frank we wished we hadn’t bothered. He didn’t care either. This establishment is clearly living of its setting and past reputation. There is something seriously wrong when the staff attitude is one of we really don’t care.
