“A very pleasant place to stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 23, 2011

My mother and I decided to visit Mendocino a few years ago, and stayed at the MacCallum House. I apologize that this review is not based on a recent stay. However, we thoroughly enjoyed our visit. The staff were very friendly and helpful. We were checked into the room I had booked, which was a room with two double beds on the first floor. It was a lovely room and we were happy with it.

Then we received a call from the front desk, asking if we would be willing to switch rooms, because someone in a wheelchair had just arrived, and needed a room on the first floor. We were given a suite upstairs in exchange. It was a full two-bedroom suite with a jacuzzi tub. Of course, we said yes.

I would definitely recommend this inn to anyone traveling to Mendocino. I look forward to having the opportunity to visit them again sometime.

My husband and I just ended another wonderful stay at the Mac House! The breakfast was truly amazing as was the service, as always! We dined the first night. The Wild King Salmon was the best I ever had! My husband had the filet and remarked it was "as soft as butter". We stayed in the cottages. The hot tub was clean, and hot when we checked in! The room itself was quaint and surprisingly very private. The Innkeepers Rebecca, Jackie, Evan and their manager Sarah were super friendly and very informative. Gave us great information of things to do in the area including a little known African Hoof Sanctuary south of Mendocino. We walked the headlands and managed to catch the most spectacular sunset! We'll definitely be back!

Room Tip: Cottages are super cute and private! Their new suites up the hill are uber fab!

Admittedly, no place on earth seems to be unaffected by the recession, and sadly Mendocino has not been spared, either. There are now several vacant storefronts where there used to be interesting little shops, a reminder that the downturn has affected us all. And a number of "For Sale" signs have popped up in front of properties throughout Mendocino, again a sign of the times. So you could address this situation two ways: stay home and dream about Mendocino, or go stay at the MacCallum House and do what you can to support the local economy up in that little corner of paradise.

We chose to do the latter, and I'm pleased to report that MacCallum house is alive and well, offering stunning vistas of the Mendocino Headlands, cozy and somewhat rustic accommodations, as well as serving delicious food in the famed restaurant.

But above all, what really shined for us this time at "Mac House" as the locals call it is the service. From reservations (Rebecca was awesome), to dining, to checkout, you are greeted warmly and really looked after... For example, you get two wooden nickels good for a free glass of any of their premium local wines or other beverage of your choice to enjoy on the veranda in the evening, or those same tokens can be used against your dinner bill. You won't need them for breakfast as a delicious and filling breakfast awaits any guest, included in the room price. Everyone is nice, everyone wants you to enjoy yourself, and the result is a stay that is always special, regardless of what the stock market is doing!

There was a wedding held on the front lawn while we stayed there (what a beautiful setting for exchanging vows) and the party that they had at the reception appeared to be a blast... We enjoyed seeing the decorations and all the festivities given that we were celebrating an anniversary of our own, but that does bring up the thought that you might want to ask if there are any special events scheduled for the main house if you will be staying upstairs, and if there is one scheduled, you might consider staying in one of the cottages away from the house or up the hill in one of their other buildings... or make sure if there is a party downstairs in the main house you get invited to join in the festivities!!!

There have been some changes at the MacCallum House due to the economy, for example room fridges used to be filled with free beverages, and now they charge a nominal feel for the in-room goodies. I would have to say that it appears that some maintenance in the rooms has been deferred as a way of controlling costs, (our room is ready for a thorough cleaning and painting touch-up), but overall the experience is still one of romance and revitalization, which only Mendocino is able to supply in such abundance.

If you are wiling and able to get with the rustic vibe instead of expecting San Francisco 4 star hotel standards, you will quickly lose yourself in the charm of it all and find yourself forgetting about the world and all its problems. One particular case in point: they cover the TVs with little fabric quilts... which was sufficient to keep us from removing the cover and turning it on. Just that little touch of keeping harsh realities at bay goes a long way towards making your stay a delight.

One of our favorite parts of the stay: the jacuzzi outside our room with a clear view of the starlit night... kinda tough to beat that, eh?

At the end of the day, the key for us with any stay is 1) how welcome you feel while you are there, 2) how much you miss it after you leave, and 3) how badly you want to return. In our case, we felt genuinely welcome while we were there, we're both bummed to be back at work instead of wandering the headlands of the Mendo coast, and we both look forward to our return in the next few months to take in another dose of Mendocino Magic...

Room Tip: Check out the website pictures... the rooms vary WIDELY, but all have their own distinct charm.

There is no doubt that this is a lovely place to stay but next time I would definitely opt for a separate cottage or a room in the main house. The Barn rooms - the walls are paper thin so you can hear EVERYTHING that takes place in your neighbors room. The fireplaces in the Barn are wood burning and if your neighbor chooses to use their fireplace you experience a very strong smoke smell in your room. If these things are acceptable to you then you can enjoy a room in the Barn. Other than those negatives it's a great place to experience and visit.

McCallum House was so cozy, we loved the cute little cottage we stayed at. We definitely made a lot of use of the hot tub and bathtub, perfect on the first rainy day we were there. The bartender, her name escapes me at the moment, was amazing as well. Her drinks were very tasty (I'm not a big cocktail person, but I loved her concoctions) and her hospitality was wonderful despite the fact she was extremely busy.
The food was even better than I expected. I was pleasantly surprised with the full breakfast + mimosa we received every morning. My eggs were perfectly poached both mornings and the view from the porch is lovely. Dinner too was something we continued to talk about on our way home. The foie gras was creamy, the dayboat scallops were juicy with the perfect amount of sear and the steak melted like butter in my mouth.
The weekend was and will remain very memorable for both of us and when we return to Mendocino, we will definitely stay again at McCallum House.

Lovely and historic inn in the heart of Mendocino.

They have several different types of rooms, so check their site to help decide which is best for you.

When we arrived, we were surprised to see daylight streaming in on both sides of our doorway (on old barn door). Fearing a nasty breeze later that night, I reported it to the front desk and even asked if we could be moved. Unfortunately, they were booked so relocating was not possible.

We did not freeze (our room had both a wood-burning fireplace and electric baseboard heat), and a handyman fixed the doorway early the next day. Nice job and kudos for the quick response.

Note: the bathroom in #17 does not have baseboard heat and was the chilliest part of our unit. There is a sauna in there, so I suppose---- if you really got cold--- you could always turn on the sauna!

17 also has it's own private, outdoor hot tub and we loved using that both nights of our stay. Could even see the stars on night two as---surprisingly--- there was no fog!

Food is very good. Drinks are a bit pricey (some cocktails at $13).

Not sure I'd pay full price for what we got, but by winning an auction on their site, our total cost was just $660 for our stay: two nights in a room that sleeps four, $128 in food and drink credits, plus four made-to-order breakfasts.

The inn needs complete update, New carpet and amgood cleaning.it is very expensive for what you get. Our room was very noise and bad smell. Will not go back to this house again. It is expensive for what you get in return.
