“Best of the old and the new”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 16, 2012

This property has the charm of an historic hotel and the comfort and convenience of a modern inn. The garden suites, some of which are dog friendly, are terrific. They are wonderfully appointed and each has its own personality. This was our second visit and we will definitely return.

We stayed in the main hotel many years ago and didn't remember having a negative experience. On this occasion we were offered a garden room at what seemed to be a very high price for the off season, and the front desk clerk conveyed the attitude that we should be grateful for the rate. Our room smelled musty. The bed was uncomfortable. The television seemed to be an artifact from the 1980s. Lighting was dim. Only two towels in the room, and couldn't rouse anyone at the front desk to bring more. WiFi didn't work. Flashlights for emergency lighting had no batteries. No ventilation in the room. We will never return

We have stayed here twice, once in the main hotel above the lobby and once in the remodeled rooms behind the hotel. We loved the view of the ocean from the hotel but the room was older and the bed was small. It was nice to come downstairs to sit by the fireplace and enjoy the holiday decorations, very festive. The room had a balcony (shared) but it was winter and the weather was stormy so it was hard to enjoy it. The second room was behind the hotel and the room was long and narrow, not very inviting but it was closer to town and other attractions, shops and restaurants. They are both nice but nothing is luxurious so if that's what you are looking for this is not the place. We liked the ambiance and the rustic feel to the hotel like you were stepping back in time. It can be pricey but if you catch them on a special you can get one night free or 50% off the room rate during a slow time so the rest is not as crucial. Great place to stay if you want to be right in town and not hassle with driving.

Room Tip: There are nicer rooms in the back building that seemed more inviting just ask and you might have to...

I chose Mendocino Hotel based on location and price. Most of the accommodations in Mendocino feature an "antique" or "Victorian" atmosphere; Mendocino Hotel shares this theme. Antique furnishings, oak carvings and a real wood-burning fireplace greet you upon entry. Our room was at the front of the building with views of the ocean and it's own bathroom/shower. Be careful, some rooms at this hotel have shared bathroom facilities. I gave only four stars because the room was a little musty smelling and there was a little water damage in the bathroom. To me this is acceptable based on age of the building which appears to be an original 1800's era boarding house or hotel. The hotel cafe was better than I could have asked for. The decor was tasteful and creative, the menu featured fresh local fair. I recommend the crab benedict. Please note the live Ficus trees planted in the cafe. Lovely!

Room Tip: There are rooms offered in the original antique building and in a newer group of buildings just behi...

We stayed at the Mendocino Hotel last March via a groupon, enjoyed the setting looking over the headlands, spacious room w/fireplace and great food. We took walks along the headlands and had a chance to see whales off the coast.

Room Tip: The garden suites are away from the main bldg but more spacious.

Our room was a tad noisy (24) but ocean view and entrance to a common deck made a delightful spot to sip a glass of wine before a lovely dinner downstairs. Victoriana all around, even a claw foot bath tub. Very sympathetic renovation and revival.

When I bought a Groupon for the Mendocino Hotel, I thought we were staying in the back of the hotel on Main Street where I assume there was some garden. I was actually concerned that I'd have trouble finding parking with all the tourists that converge on Mendocino on the weekends. Imagine my delight when it turned out that we scored a large room in one of the guest houses two blocks away on Ukiah Street. You can barely see the driveway from the street since it looks like you're entering someone's private property, but lo and behold, there's ample parking and even a garden walkway on the side of a blue house.

Even though it's obviously not that old a building, the spacious rooms are decorated in the same Victorian style that the main hotel showcases. The furniture looks appropriately antique like you're a guest at the Shady Rest where Uncle Joe is movin' kinda slow, but it doesn't feel tired. King-size bed, lace curtains, big armoire, drawing room sofa, marble fireplace, the works (see photo). The bathroom is huge, and even if it didn't have many modern touches, it was comfortable enough. By the way, I had no idea how quiet Mendocino gets at night. Unlike Fort Bragg, it's as still as a tomb and can be unnerving if you are looking for some nocturnal entertainment. By the way, the Groupon allowed us two nights for just $242, which is quite a deal for these parts. I say go for it if you can get a deal.
