“beautiful view and nice small touches”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 23, 2005

My fiance and I stayed here for one night last week. Unlike the other reviewers, we were looking for more modestly priced accomodations, so we asked for the cheapest room (the Diamond Room at $139/night). The room itself was just okay (small, cozy, a bit too floral), but what made this inn worth the stay were a) the view and b) the little details that the innkeepers thought of.

The view of the ocean and nearby cliffs really is excellent. In their front garden, they have a few reasonably comfy, spacious wooden lawn chairs set up. We were there on a Sunday night, and we had the chairs all to ourselves to enjoy the sunset. In the early morning, the chairs offered a great vantage point from which to watch for whales. (The breakfast room also has an expansive view of the ocean, but it wasn't nearly as peaceful and relaxing as admiring the view from outside with the birds circling overhead.)

We really appreciated the little details the inn offered. They have a small collection of videos and boardgames you can borrow. (The videos came in handy since there's not much to do in Mendocino at night.) Our room also came with a binder containing all the menus of local restaurants. Most usefully, the innkeeper had made his own maps of the state parks around Mendocino and Fort Bragg, which give suggestions about what trails to take. They also had hot chocolate available all night long in the room adjacent to the breakfast room.

Breakfast was good (not mouthwatering, but pleasant and satisfying)...that morning, we had homemade applesauce, orange scones, strawberry French toast, and ham or sausage. The scones were really, really delicious. Everything else was just good. The tables are communal, so you get to meet the other guests staying at the hotel.

I really liked the innkeepers, especially the guy, who seemed to genuinely love the area and gave enthusiastic recommendations about what to see. (He gave us a great tip about an Indian restaurant in Jenner, which turned out to be a tasty lunch.)

Hope that helps.

Make sure you get the Emerald or Obsidian suite for fabulous views at a price. You can sit on the comfy sofa and watch the sun go down if its too cold to sit on your deck. The innkeepers are professional and helpful. Very good breakfast also with great view from dining room.

The view from Agate Cove is the best part of this Inn. The view while eating breakfast and watching the sunset is top notch.

The room we had was the Emerald, at $300 it was the best room at the Inn with a view of the ocean (it might be the only room with a view of the ocean) a fireplace and a soaking tub for two. The room itself was nicely decorated with attractive wall paper and furnishings. The room seemed to have been recently updated.

Unfortunately the same cannot be said for the bathroom. The tile and decor looked like it came out of the 70's. The soaking tub was large but old and yellowing with age. The tub seemed to be sinking as it had problems with the grout and was repaired with vinyl caulking.

There was no breakfast buffet/bar where you might pick up cereal or a pastry. You had a reservation time for breakfast and don't bother showing up 10 minutes early. The earliest we could get breakfast was 8:45...so we drove to town and got pastries and coffee because we were starving. You got what they made that morning (it seemed to be portion controlled) Breakfast consisted of a breakfast burrito one day (we thought we were getting an omelette) and pancakes the other (log cabin syrup not maple).

The Inn resides between a major road and Highway 1. We slept with the windows open and a few times it sounded like a car was driving through the room.

All in all it wasn't horrible, but at $300 a night you expect to really be treated.

We purchased the inn a few years after your visit. We completely agree with your review. The view was the best part of this property. We saw the potential to turn Agate Cove Inn into a stunning retreat and that is what we have done. The cottages have all been remodeled. The breakfast room has been expanded to allow for cafe style seating. We serve a fabulous breakfast and you are welcome to as much as you like. The Coffee room is open 24 hours a day. We hope you will visit us and experience the Agate Cove Inn that is our dream come true.
