I had many events to attend one weekend on the Mendocino Coast and wanted to camp with my family while I was there. This was gorgeous camping: a Little River ran by the site, the Pacific Ocean and a lovely beach was just a short walk through the campground and across the highway, there was a meadow where the children could run around and lots of trees that were perfect for forts and climbing. The campground was quiet and I enjoyed sitting and reading both at the site, taking in the gorgeous canyon in is situated in, and across the street at the ocean. The kids found shells and rocks at the ocean. The rangers were super friendly and helpful. They have all the maps and information you could ever want and a junior rangers program. There is a small informational center about the unique bit of coast that Van Damme is situated on and a small gift shop.
When it was time for me to go to an event, there were several showers for me to choose from ($1.75 for 8 minutes) and I could go out feeling refreshed. It is less than two miles from the village of Mendocino with its shops, headlands, beaches and grocery stores and about ten miles from Fort Bragg which is a larger city with more businesses and other things to do.
