“Amazing Find”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 20, 2014

We were looking for a nice place near Shasta that wasn't a hotel but we needed 10 rooms and they needed to be nice. We found that there were a few lodges here and there but the quality we were looking for wasn't up to par. This place looked wonderful from the numerous photos they have posted but you never really know what you are going to get. I have never had so many people call, text and email to say how great a location was. These 10 farm guys and one lone woman LOVED this location. It's a bit off the beaten path but totally worth it. They have 11 rooms but each room can comfortably sleep several people. They had a great area for everyone to relax in together and the staff was phenomenal. A week later I am still getting thanked for finding such a great place. McCloud Mercantile Hotel will stay on our company list as preferred getaway location. When booking large groups it is always tricky but the staff here made it so easy. They were thoughtful and made sure to provide lots of options for other needs we would have. They were happy to make recommendations for activities and restaurants and even made the reservations for us. Our group was on a 6 day road trip from our Corporate Headquarters in Ellensburg, WA all the way to Los Angeles, CA with a different hotel, activity and restaurant each day. This is the only place they "wrote home about" and the only place they are still talking about. I really can't say enough about our experience here, it was truly exceptional.

Room Tip: They have many different room types with several different types of beds to best suit your family an...

We spent the night here and, while there was no snow due to the drought, there was a great feeling of warmth and communtiy here. Our room, the Charles Miller, was large and well decorated - its not shabby country but historic in a tasetful way. And, the bathroom was to die for! The tub was amazing. Breakfast in the morning was delicious and you could tell everyone was friendly and chatty. The Candy store is a must see. All in all, we would stay there again and recommend to friends.

Room Tip: Charles Miller Suite

I love the Mercantile, it has become my favourite place to stay in Shasta after many years and different places. The owners are super friendly and very warm. I recently sent friends here to stay and they didn't want to leave. Great big rooms all with charm. I've seen most of them. None of their rooms are shabby and the fireplace in the common area is a real treat....highly recommend.

Once again a wonderful weekend in McCloud thanks to Kevin, Darlene, Aubrey and Scott (White Mountain Fountain) and the 12" of fresh snow. We had the Railroad room and it was very spacious for 2 couples and a black Lab. I would recommend the Merchantile Hotel to anyone and have already recommendeded it to many. The ambiance is why we go there and the wooden floors are still squeaky, the rooms are still toasty and the guests are still friendly. We will be back.

Room Tip: Talk with Kevin or Darlene, they will help put you in the right room for you. We had a dog an 2 cou...

We're from San Diego so visiting the northern reaches of California takes some coordination and airline cooperation. After business in Arcata, we headed east to finally explore the Shasta-Trinity and Lassen areas of California. We made the McCloud Mercantile Hotel our home-base. This is no bric-a-brac, doily-filled B&B (thank goodness!). The Hotel has been lovingly restored and decorated. As soon as you climb the broad, wide staircase into the Hotel and see the William Morris (?) inspired wallpaper, you know this is going to be a special place. We stayed in the Minnesota Room - it was easily 3X as big as we expected from the pictures on the website! The finishes are well done - from the wide-plank hardwood floors to the awesome waterfall shower head in the footed tub - the room colors were bright and whimsical; it was spotlessly clean. Even the free wireless access was easy; it felt so wrong to need it in such a remote town so evocative of the early 1900s! Our arrival and departure were both "after/before" hours - but the management made our check-in and check-out simple and hassle-free. They even pointed us to the (only) restaurant serving dinner late on a Friday night. Guests have $20 breakfast credit at the diner on the first floor of the Mercantile - it's decorated in bright, fun colors, great lighting fixtures, and huge plate-glass windows. We had picture-perfect Indian summer weather so the breakfast views of Shasta from the Mercantile were inspiring and the hearty breakfasts fueled our days exploring. We'd highly recommend McArthur-Burney Falls State Park and Lassen National Park. We were lucky the road through Lassen was still open; no snowfall yet this season!

Room Tip: All rooms are on the second floor (stairs) of the Mercantile, I think. We were on the street-side...

We stayed at the McCloud Mercantile Hotel for an Autumn weekend getaway with our boys, ages 6 and almost 3. Chose the Railroad Room and it did not disappoint. Spacious, comfortable beds, original detailing, great railroad deep bath with separate shower and long vanity (no cramped bathroom here!), high ceilings and charming decor. Nice little sitting area just outside the room (an extended family in a couple rooms nearby used it quite a bit, perfect for them). Everyone loved the fresh and tasty breakfast at the corner cafe, and the $20/night credit was much appreciated. The kids played with Dad on old Rail cars and railway tracks near the hotel while Mom packed up the morning we left. The boys were so excited and burned off great energy before brunch and the long drive home. Great little stop in the Shasta area. HIGHLY recommend.
