Nothing to do in Mariposa?! You've had a great day in Yosemite, you are back in Mariposa for the evening and looking for something other than sitting in front of your hotel room TV for the rest of the night. The town is pretty much dead at night, as a resident I admit, it is slow place, but that is what makes Mariposa such a great place to relax. There ARE things to do though. If your hotel has a pool, the weather in Mariposa is ideal most of the year for a swim. Their is a short bike/walking trail called the Mariposa Parkway, it starts at the Best Western and runs along the Mariposa Creek. It pass by the towns two parks, the Arts Park, where there is live music in the summer months, and the town park up on the hill above. The town park has tennis courts and a good skate park, after dark it is a good place to enjoy a walk or the play ground. You can ride a bike or take a walk just about anywhere and you will feel perfectly safe.

The Sixth Street Cinema is in the heart of downtown Mariposa and presents films on the weekends and sometimes during the week. Weekday films are sometimes free. This is a "public cinema" and serves as the anchor for the local arts community. It is a great place to see foreign and independent films. Discussions after films happen every now and then, and they are usually quite interesting.

The county fair is in September, a Fly-in happens in October. If you want to stick around during the day there is the Mining and Mineral Museum, the History Center, and the Mariposa County Courthouse to get an education about the Gold Rush. You can also take some time to explore the Merced River canyon for hiking, swimming, flora and fauna. The Visitor's Center is at the 4 way stop at the end of town at the 41 & 48 split they will have info for good camping spots, etc. Mariposa is a great place to start a sunday drive or ride on some great twisty and scenic roads. Sorry no Wal-Mart or Chuckie Cheese, we think that is a good thing, that's why we live here. Mariposa is a cool Maberry-like little town that grows on you if you let it.

Mariposa is a wonderful community reminiscent of the California Gold era. It is a great stop on the way to Yosemite and has incredible character and charm.
