“Amazing bed & breakfast”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 14, 2013

I am typically not a fan of B&Bs, but I had a fantastic stay at the Highland House. I wanted to stay near Yosemite but did not want to pay the high amounts to stay in the park itself. The Highland House was about one half-hour drive to Yosemite and was resonably priced. If you feel like you are heading into the middle of nowhere, you are probably going the right way. :)

I stayed in the Forest Retreat room. It included a four-poster bed, walk-in shower, huge bathtub, table, and cute window seat. It was very clean and featured nice linens. I did not hear any noise from other visitors throughout the night. The B&B has a large living room for use, including a large DVD collection (you can take a DVD and watch it in your room) and games. Breakfast is included, and they allow you to take "extras" for the hike. The yard is large, and deer, hummingbird, and other wildlife regularly walk right up to the house. Amazing stay.

The Highland House may be a little bit out of the way, but it is easily found with a good map or a satellite navigation device. Once you've found it, you'll not regret staying here. We stayed here after spending a tiring full day in Yosemite National Park. It is a reasonable drive from the valley floor, so leave plenty of time to travel as the road out of the Park is narrow for the best part and is best navigated in daylight. The house is set in a beautiful and peaceful environment, and was the perfect end to our exhausting day. The kitchen is well equipped and stocked with snacks and drinks aplenty. There is also a folder with information on local restaurants and their menus and telephone numbers for enquiries/reservations. Our bedroom was modest in size. The bed was very comfortable and the bathroom was adequately fitted with hot shower etc. Breakfast was generous, and done in typical B&B style with other guests around a dining table. Overall, an excellent B&B, which is slightly off the main roads but definitely worth the detour.

Off the beaten path and vegan friendly. A beautiful, warm home surrounded by forest and wildlife. Inside you will find Mike and Lizzie. Both extremely sincere in their invitation and desire for you to feel as if this is your home. We brought our own food, but little did we expect to find the entire pantry (vegan options included) open to us. The kitchen is better outfitted than most homes and had we known (and had the time) we would've been whipping up all kinds of goodies!. We had no cell phone reception and were invited to make national calls (we arrived the day before Hurricane Sandy hit the mid-Atlantic and this was the only way to reach our family back home). Llizzie was even so great as to be the liaison between our family and the B&B, willing to pass on messages should anyone call for us. LOVE Mike and Lizzie and LOVE Highland House. Our next trip to Yosemite will definitely include a couple of days just to enjoy Highland.

Room Tip: All three rooms are cozy, but if you want oooooo, stay in the Forest Room.

No sense reiterating all the great reviews, other than to say they are all true. For our two night stay in mid Oct, Nora, took good care of us. The only reason we couldn't eat everything at breakfast was because Nora made sure there was plenty of everything for everybody. Nothing went to waste though as it only took a couple minutes for the deer to come in and finish what we couldn't. Try to get there before dark the first night because it's a little hard to find that first time. They really take care of you here and we'll definitely be back.

From the moment we arrived, highland house felt special. It's extremely rural, we saw deer on the lawn in the mornings... The fawn must only have been about 5 weeks old. Hummingbirds abound, hovering at the bird table. Wild turkeys stroll around the garden. Our room was fantastic, lots of space, very clean, charming. Bed incredibly comfortable, we slept so well. Breakfast is a sociable affair, at a large dining table and is different every day. Nora's breakfasts are a veritable feast !! Loved every moment and we hope that we visit again someday. Thank you for looking after us so well :-)

It was out of the way but worth the drive! Very comfortable and cozy. The breakfast was great all three mornings. Nora, Lizzy and Michael all made us feel very much at home. There were sodas and snacks waiting for us. We loved the cookies and trail mix! We met interesting people at breakfast each morning and exchanged traveling experiences. The wildlife was fun to watch.
I appreciated being able to use the washer and dryer, since we were on a 2 week vacation. Overall a very nice experience!

If you don't like peace and quiet, wonders of nature, absolutely fabulous breakfast meals with fruits, breads....two or three types.....eggs, meats....two types....yogurt, juice, coffee, along with extra nuts and trail mixes, sodas, computer service, laundry and a quiet and clean room.....then this place is not for you. When we drove up, an envelope with our key inside was clipped to the mailbox at the front door. We just let ourselves in, did what was asked of us.....made ourselves at home.....and enjoyed refreshments on the patio. We watched the wild turkeys strut by while the hummingbirds buzzed in constant rhythm and dance overhead. The squirrels fussed at us while the deer looked on. The Highland House B&B is one hour door-to-door from Mariposa Grove, home of the giant sequoia trees, and the same in the opposite direction for Yosemite. We all gathered in the kitchen while Lizzie or Nora prepared our breakfast and Michael, the owner, shared some interesting sites to visit as we left for the next leg of our trip. It just doesn't get much better than this!
