I thought the hotel location was excellent (on a sandy beach, 5 minute walk to Venice Beach, close to LAX). However, our first impression was not good, we drove up to valet, then he pointed to a luggage cart. So valet service at this hotel includes the valet guy watching you grab a luggage cart and take your luggage from the car and load it onto the cart. I guess this is what the $24/day valet charge is for?? We recently stayed at the Fairfield Inn in Anaheim and their $11/day valet service included the valet guy helping you with your luggage. I asked for a roll away cot (weeks prior to arriving, and the front desk acknowledged it when we checked in), but it took 4.5 hours and 4 phone calls to get it. Finally at 9pm (with tired kids) we got the knock, and received our roll away bed. Of course there were no pillows, so that was another call.
As well, when we entered the room, all the garbage cans were on the furniture, not sure if the housekeeping staff were too lazy to put them on the ground, or if this is a new LA trend. Great views of the bay if you are on the water side (I'd imagine it would be noisy if you were staying on the street side). The rooms certainly look recently renovated and we well designed (we stayed in a one bedroom suite which was very large with a dining table). I had to use earplugs at night however, since there was a lot of noise coming from the bathroom (sounded like pipes running, not sure if was because the ice machine was on the other side of the wall).
We purchased the "breakfast package," which was a complete rip off. You don't get to choose what you want, you get to choose from a limited menu (nothing over $11 from what I could tell). However, the quality of the breakfast was excellent, and I would certainly eat there again, just don't get the breakfast package.
The stay started with poor service (valet who watches you load your luggage, and 4 hours of calling housekeeping to get what was requested weeks prior), and ended it with poor service... the coffee they give you in the room is of very poor quality, and I discovered when we woke up on our last morning, housekeeping didn't bother to replace the coffee or the cups when they cleaned the room! (I guess you only get one .50 package of coffee for the $360/n x 2nights we paid!) So I had to drink the only package available (decaf, which is not what I needed!) with a glass drinking cup (that was left over from the day before, I guess they don't replace these when they clean the room either). After alternating my hands (since putting hot coffee in a glass water glass makes the glass very hot - just an FYI to the hotel management), it was time to check out early! Yes, I could have called housekeeping, but the kids were sleeping and I didn't want to wait 4 hours.
So would I stay here again? Probably not. Not because of the rooms or location, but only because extremely poor service for the 2 nights we stayed. I have to say without a doubt the $119/n Fairfield Inn in Anaheim beats this hotels housekeeping (they took 15 minutes to bring extra towels), valet and service hands down!
Bay side have great views. 4th floor is best.
