I visit about 20 breweries a year around the USA but I’m extra fortunate to have English Ales Brewery just a mile walk from my home. Beyond supplying many of the Monterey-area restaurants and festivals with their popular line of draught beers, the brewery is also a quaint neighborhood pub in the English country style filled with local residents, workers, CSU Monterey Bay students, and some token beer tourists. It’s not uncommon for some of the local elected officials to hold office hours there, and you’ll probably overhear some local political debate over endangered species at the beach or where to put the next shopping center. The ceiling is almost completely lined with around 1,000 ceremic beer mugs decorated with the nicknames of their patrons. The brewer, Tom, is usually on hand and welcomes discussions about beer and brewing. You can order a set of tasters to sample all their beers, but my favorites are the seasonal stout and porter. The staff are always friendly, but you don’t want to get on Hussein’s bad side. The attractive staff also produce a calendar of tasteful nude photography each year to benefit local charities. If you’re looking for a hideaway neighborhood watering hole, English Ales is a real hometown pub.
