“Loved life at the Shade!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 15, 2007

From the start the service was impeccable. It's a gorgeous hotel with the finest of everything. Many things are complimentary, such as computers, DVD's, bike rentals on the beach, and breakfast. The room was amazing, with the best bedding we've slept on at any hotel. The hot tub, and the colorful lighting in the room made the stay out of this world. I wouldn't go anywhere else in the South Bay.

Have stayed in shade on a number of occasions on business, the staff are always incredibly friendly and the service and rooms are excellent. I can't understand any of the non-5 star reviews on here. There really is a feeling of home from home. Simply the only place to stay in LA. I'll be back there soon...

Stunning hotel in a superb location 2 blocks back from the beach. Spent a week here while on business and everything from the staff to food was first class.
The rooms are beautifully appointed and the beds are to die for. I had dinner 2/3 times in the restaurant and could not fault it.

Highly recommended and will definately stay again.

I just returned from a long weekend in Manhattan Beach at Shade Hotel. The rooms were very cool! And the bar seems to be the place to be on the weekend. I was also impressed with how close the hotel was to everything in Manhattan Beach. Everything is within very close proximity to the hotel, including the beach.

I kept a car at the hotel and appreciated how helpful the valet was in having it ready for me. The overall service was great!

Shade Hotel is the most recent and well needed addition to the downtown Manhattan Beach scene. A good combination of laid back beach ambience and LA sophistication. The rooms are fabulous and the staff pride themselves on exemplary caring for their all ready pampered clients. A wondeful choice for a week-end get away at the beach or a long term comfortable stay.

The Shade Hotel (oops, I mean Luxury Boutique Hotel to use their words) if a funky looking, slightly unusual design that probably has just tried too hard to be different and unusual and has probably as a result forgotten some of the basics that actually set a great hotel aside from a good or ok hotel.

I think because they go so caught up in creating a "look" and a "feel" that they have missed some really fundamental things - like good caring service that a small hotel like this should excel in. The people on the front desk are cheery (usually) but actually don't really want to help you beyond the obvious.

There is an amazing looking bar but the bar is also where the check in desk is (and so if you arrive in the evening you walk into a booming loud room and have to shout to check in). The bar is also where breakfast is served (you need to have plenty of tiem to eat as service is slow as due to the size things are made from scratch which is great, but less good for the business traveller that needs to be in and out).

The rooms are large and clearly for single or couples and bringing kids here is not a good idea. The rooms have screens around the large bath with some trendy lighting effects. The bathroom misses a trick having lots of space but only one basin. There is a large stone floor shower which is a good size.

There is free wireless access which is a good touch.

All the rooms pretty much face either the busy main road or a side road and so can be a bit noisy and not greta view. I found I kept the curtains closed even in the daytime as theer were people passing, a farmers market stall just outside the window.

We had a meeting at the hotel and the room (Green Room) was nice and the chaps servicing it very helpful. But as it is not really a business hotel we had to keep things like music we were using down to avoid annoyign guests a few feet away from the room. Noise at night being a problem as the bar can be very loud and if you have a room near the bar you need earplugs I believe from fellow travellers.

While I was at the hotel I thought it was funky and trendy and glad to have stayed there. But was pleased I was not paying for it as I would not have felt it was good value due to the negatives.

I found I was yearning for things like a fitness room and fast service. You need to travel some 10 minutes by car to a gym which costs $20 a time.

Will I go back? No, I think trying it out was enough for me. But glad I have.

We stayed at the Shade one night last month for a quick getaway. We live in Los Angeles and are familiar with Manhattan Beach.

It was a great experience. Their cancellation policy is a little harsh, but after speaking with the manager, she allowed us to postpone our trip and offered us the same discounted room rate. The property has a very hip feel to it, complete with a club-like party at the bar at night (we stayed on a Sat. night.) That being said, we were exhausted and were not bothered by any noise, even though we were on the first floor opening to the atrium near the bar.

With regard to amenities, the tub is wonderful - large enough for two people. The bathroom products smell heavenly, and the shower is powerful enough to blast away any muscle tension from a hectic work week. The bed is comfortable but firm - great for me but my husband-to-be said it was very uncomfortable for him, preventing a great night's sleep.

The food was very good - we had a late lunch at the bar, room service that night, and breakfast the next morning.

The only drawback for me is the pricing...it was worth it for us given the discounted "last minute" rate, but not sure I would be a repeat visitor at full price. The Shade is good for a quick urban retreat, or for those who want to vacation in a beach town close to LA, but for the money I would head down to one of the resorts in Laguna Niguel or Dana Point. For my fiance, the firm bed was the big drawback.

All in all, we had a wonderful stay!
