Our go-to local restaurant is The Fishbar. We have seldom patronized a sports bar...but we are always on the lookout for fresh fish. When the popular sports bar, Sharkee's moved one block from its old location to take advantage of later open hours, the Fishbar occupied its empty space on Highland Ave. The transition seemed to take place over night. Excited to have fish featured so close to home we went that first week and had our first meal surrounded by all of the old surfer trappings of Sharkee's but loving the fish! Over the next month, as if little elves came in during the night, the restaurant slowly transformed itself into the lively but classier restaurant that it is today. While the multiple big screen TVs still cover the walls, all showing various sporting events, the rest of the decor has a style that it current and classy.
But we go for the food, not the decor, and there we are not disappointed. Each day seems to feature a different seafood item. Just last night, a Wednesday...we enjoyed crab. The daily specials offered crab as appetizers and entrees in a variety of forms. We enjoyed the crab cake appetizer that was truly more crab than filling and just melted on our tongues. In addition to the specials of the day, their regular menu is varied...so you can also order chicken or burger items. But I must admit, we always opt for fish. Some of our favorites are their Mahi Mahi Mediterranean, their Baja Fish Tacos, their various shrimp dishes, their salmon. The fish is never overcooked and just flakes apart delicately. My husband starts every meal with the soup and salad combination. The Fishbar is famous for their clam chowder, a thick (while not pasty) white chowder that is sweeter than most I have eaten.
We try to arrive during happy hour so we can take advantage of their $1.50 each special on oysters on the half shell...always chilled and fresh. We attribute their success to their attentive, up-beat staff and especially to their chef, Jessica Jordan. She is a dynamo in the kitchen, she works the floor visiting tables and maintains their Facebook page letting fans know what is coming at the restaurant. They recently won the popular vote for best fish restaurant in the South Bay. No matter what day we go, the restaurant is always filled with regulars...everybody knows your name!
