“Don't fall for the hype!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed October 14, 2013

So many reasons to stay away. Really. I know it's popular with a great location but if it is your quest to be treated poorly whilst paying too much for mediocre food - go for it. We have dined at Nobu before but decided to try the new location on the beach in Malibu. I can't begin to tell you how horrible an experience it was and caution anyone who is thinking of going there to go next door to Nikita for a far better dining experience - right on the same beach. Same owner and far better treatment and vibe. Okay - back to Nobu. We had a reservation for a birthday dinner and requested a table outside on the rail - knowing as always that they are coveted and we might have to wait. When we arrived early for our reservation, we were seated by a corgial but unfriendly hostess who seated us next to the doorway. We asked for a table outside and she fretted and hemmed and hawed and then told us it would be about 45 minutes. We agreed and she sent us to the lounge to wait. We went outside to the lounge area and sat down. After a few minutes a blonde hostess came to inquire why we were sitting there. We explained and she told us to "come with me - I will check you in." We told her we had already checked in and were waiting for our table. She was curt, ruder than rude and insisted that we leave that area as it was only for "the waiting list." Whatever that means. She was not only rude but demeaning and condescending. Does she realize that we are paying customers and she is a hostess at Nobu??? We travel the world and eat in many restaurants of all kinds and this is BY FAR the worst treatment we have ever received anywhere. Why risk it - go anywhere else. As many of these reviews say - there are FAR better restaurauts in the area.....Geoffrey's, Paradise Cove, Nikita next door, Malibu Seafood or even Marmalade Cafe. Not fine dining but at least you will be treated well.
Okay - so we sit at the bar and wait. And wait. Finally one of the 5 bartenders (yes 5 - shooting the breeze with each other) took our order. Mike the bartender wanted to be nice and mixed a decent drink - and we never saw him again. Oh, we saw him but he never returned to ask us if we wanted food or another drink. Seriously?
55 minutes past......I check back with the front desk. 4, count them, 4 hostesses behind the desk. No one looks at me. Finally the same sort of nice but script reading hostess tells me that we are 4th in line for a table and it may be a while. What? I inquire why parties of 2 have come in after us and been seated on the patio and she has no explanation other than reciting the "we will seat you as fast as we can" line. We left. We walked next door to Nikita. We told them why we were there without a reservation and they cound not have been nicer. We waited a few minutes, were seated and welcomed to a table on the rail on the patio, given a blanket, menus and an amazing server named Josh P. and had a wonderful relaxing evening of nice wine, good food and we were treated like they were happy we were there. I KNOW NOBU IS TRENDY, IN PEOPLE MAGAZINE, REAL CELEBRITIES AND EVEN THE KARDASHIANS GO THERE......BUT TRUST US, STAY AWAY.

“For us a unforgettable expirience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 8, 2013

We had a reservation for the Nobu Hollywood that evening but driving the coastline during lunch time we came across Nobu Malibu and decided to be spontaneous.
We received a table outside and it was marvelous!
We had a very attentive waiter who gave us good recommendations and we enjoyed the Food very much.
Cancelling the evening appointment was done by the staff - so we had a really nice time outside and found it very relieving not having to travel downtown LA to visit the Nobu there.
We took some fotos to keep the atmosphere for our hard days in Germany without the Pacific and this georgeous coastline.
Besides: we saw our first dolphins from this terrace.

“The best could be even better”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 5, 2013

I have developed a rule of thumb that goes like this: The quality of a restaurant's food is often in inverse proportion to the quality of the view outside the window. Call it Gibbs' Law.
I'm happy to report that Nobu defies that law. Just south of the Malibu Pier, Nobu takes full advantage of the fantastic Oceanside setting with tasteful outdoor patio seating, heaters, and lounging areas with umbrellas.
And of course, being one of the handful of Nobu restaurants across the globe, the food is exquisite. If you have some money to burn and a date to impress you cannot possibly do better than Nobu, unless your date happens to be an ocean life activist. Nobu has found itself in the crosshairs of environmental groups for serving endangered bluefin tuna. Seems like a relatively easy win for Nobu to win back many customers by simply knocking one item off of their menu, but I guess they determined that there are more people who like to eat bluefin then there are people who care about the eradication of a species.

But since this is a review of the restaurant's food and service and there is no tripadvisor gauge of environmental practices I will award Nobu five stars. If only I could add an asterisk - *unless you care about wiping out a species.

“A Dining "Experience" With an Incredible View”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 26, 2013

Driving along the Pacific coast in California is a sensational experience. Stopping at Nobu in Malibu is an added bonus. Prime real estate usually fetches top dollar entrees. Nobu is certainly not the exception. The question always remains as to whether the quality matches the price.

The overall quality of each small portion that we tasted was excellent. The cost for this indulgence was considered a treat. The beef sliders were delicious. The sushi was extremely fresh and tasty. Although tiny, the mini fish tacos were a true delight. (See pictures)

Some dining adventures are embarked upon for their ambience. The Pump Room in Bath, England or sipping tea and eating scones at Harods in London are two other notable examples.

Perched above the Pacific Ocean, Nobu provides a sense of awe. (See picture) What an amazing location for a restaurant. This is a wonderful treat for a special moment. Just be prepared for the exorbitant prices.

“Not as good as the Nobu in Hollywood”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 19, 2013

For some reason my experience at the Nobu on Holly was better. The view is incredible though at this one and you need to book a couple weeks in advance to get a reservation. They close early Thursdays like 10 am as do most places in Malibu.
