“Relaxing Malibu dining spot”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 5, 2012 via mobile

The service was excellent and the food was very good.

Beautiful views. A bit pricey, but not exorbitantly so.

The umbrellas are arranged in a such a manner, that moving one could potentially cause other diners mild discomfort.

“Simply Failed to Impress”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 3, 2012

I dined here on a Monday night, party of 3, including my wife and an out of town business associate on his first trip ever to the LA area. He was staying in Santa Monica, so we opted for a coastal dining spot drivable from our Ventura County location. I really hoped to be able to write a very positive and complimentary review, but for this night, it is simply not to be.
First, the positives. The location is incomparable, beautiful beach bluff location, open air patio dining with drop dead views up and down the Malibu coast. The weather for us was perfect, not a hint of coastal fog, brilliant blue sea, pounding surf, simply magical all around. Hard to fault the ambience and atmosphere. Top notch location. Greeting by the front desk was warm, and we were seated immediately at a great table.
Now, the not so positives. Service was very slow to get started. Maybe they sensed our table was deep in conversation and did not want to interrupt. But at some point, we were there to dine, so let’s get on with it staff. We had to call for service to start, but once engaged, things moved much better.
My wife and I are vegetarians, and the menu here is not geared to that preference. That is not a criticism, as we knew this going in. Appetizer selection was good with many interesting choices. But we were surprised that there was only one veggie entrée choice, and the server made it clear to us that they neither could nor would try any alterations or accommodations off the stock entrée menu. We had hoped for them to show some on the spot creativity, something we have been able to enjoy at many other non-veggie locations having a strong chef and kitchen staff. Our mistake here, but we recognize it is our risk. Lesson learned. To our waiter’s credit, he did make special effort to get details on the starters, and made a special point to let us know what items among the appetizers and starters were vegetarian choices.
The food was good, but nothing of special note. My wife loved her mushroom soup, albeit too salty (seems an epidemic problem in all US restaurants from our vantage point). My spinach salad was a bit over dressed for my taste. Entrees (braised tofu for us, Ahi Tuna for our guest), were acceptable, however the tofu dish with too much sauce and wetness masking what should have been brisk and fresh vegetable flavors.
The biggest downer was the wine service. Our server, a well-intentioned young gent who really was out of his element with wines, recommended a Central Coast Pinot that simply did not impress any of us. I got the feeling he was pitching what management told him to move. After tasting the recommended wine, my wife asked for alternatives, and was graciously brought two separate tasting pours of house Pinots as possible choices. A nice gesture, but one of these tasting pours was perhaps the most intensely corked wine I have smelled in a glass in a very long time. We of course rejected it immediately. I simply cannot understand how respectable wine service does not check its bottles and pours before presenting the wine to customers. This experience makes me think this place pays little to no attention to, nor really cares about ,its wine service, assuming its patrons have no palates or wine experience. That said, the wine list was very respectable in terms of choices and range of interesting selections, domestic and foreign. We ended up ordering a California Tempranillo based on our own knowledge of the list. Wine pricing was reasonable in terms of restaurant markup. So, if you dine here and want wine, based on our experience be prepared to be on your own here.
So, all in all, a lovely evening in a beautiful location with delightful company. Beyond that, average food, disappointing wine service, not an experience that would prompt us to return.

“go to geoffrey's!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 2, 2012

went after a visit to the getty villa. great location on the PCH, but quiet and somehow you don't feel like you're on/near the highway. views are lovely, the terrace is a perfect spot for a drink and leisurely brunch. food was very good and service attentive but never felt like we were rushed. will definitely return and recommend to others.

“Terrible food, excellent location”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed October 1, 2012

Living in Los Angeles near the coast for my entire life, it always amazes me why the beautiful coastal restaurants just can't have decent food. Geofrrey's is no exception. Location and environment are tip top but the food is just so so bad I actually can't believe it. We both got the surf/turf and the sauce tasted as if it had gone bad...seemed like some sort of concoction that they grabbed from the back of the refrigerator from months ago. It was just awful. Go here for a drink and an appetizer only.

“Excellent Food but Pricey”

We had brunch at Geoffrey's. The views of the pacific were great, the food was excellent. The prices were somewhat on the high side.
