I've been to the Magic Castle twice now and really enjoyed both stays. The location is perfect - a 5-minute walk to the Hollywood & Highland area, but far enough away from Hollywood Blvd to be quiet. Also very easy to get on the route to other tourist areas, eg Santa Monica.
The hotel has obviously had some refurbishment in the last couple of years, but - as others have posted here - the decor still needs to be updated in some areas. The bathroom in particular looked very old. But in terms of getting the exotic 'old-style Hollywood Motel' feel, it's right on the money.
Despite the old bathroom, I would certainly stay here again and would recommend the hotel to other travellers.

I can't say enough great things about the Magic Castle Hotel and its incredible staff. The experience was great from the moment we arrived and all the way through check out. At check in, we were provided with sparkling italian sodas (an unexpected treat on such a warm day). The rooms were tastefully appointed. And they even had complimentary breakfast and free wireless service. The best part of our stay is when we went into our room. There was a chocolate cake and a card signed by the staff. I'm not sure how they even knew it was my birthday. I highly recommend staying at the Magic Castle. You won't be disappointed.

My girlfriend and I stayed one night at the Magic Castle. Our overall impression is the Magic Castle was worth the stay. It is extremely close to all the Hollywood action. The rooms were as described with nice linens and clean appearance. Our room had new carpet. Parking is a reasonable $8 a day, not uncommon in LA no matter where you park. The front desk was friendly and we received a cold bubbly beverage upon arrival.

We use Tripadvisor for all our hotel choices when visiting a new city and as Magic Castle was rated #3 in Los Angeles and the Hotel's own website shows lovely photos of a hotel "completely renovated in 2004" we booked with confidence.

Apparently the ground floor consists of suites which are renovated, but the other rooms are certainly not renovated and are in fact quite shabby. The cleanliness was well below standard as the room was very dusty in all corners. Very old worn carpets, a functional but run down bathroom, a very noisy dilapidated air conditioning system and hard to control ceiling fan are among the highlights.

On the plus side the room was a decent size, the bed was quite comfortable, there is an empty fridge which is useful and a desk, plus a large TV and a DVD player. The wardrobe is a fair size with large mirrors and a safe. On our last day we took the complimentary continental breakfast which was very good and we would have taken every day in hindsight, although there wasn't quite enough informal seating to accomodate all the guests wanting to sit outside. We found the staff to be varied - some were helpful when we asked for advice. However there was a general reluctance to change our traveller's cheques each day which seemed incredible - we were often told they "didn't have" $100 to change, but then go back and ask someone else and they would.

This is a small apartment style hotel, with the feel of a beach hotel without the beach. The very small pool is the focal point around which the three or four floors of rooms are built - with no ramps or elevators! Getting your cases up the stairs is a nightmare!

The location of the hotel is it's best feature. Our main reason for visiting was to see a show at the Hollywood Bowl which turned out to be a 10-15 minute walk which saved being stuck in traffic. The Chinese Theatre and other main attractions are 5 minutes walk away. However, there are numerous other hotels situated along the same road which would be worth investigating if you wish to stay in this location.

We would almost certainly not return to the Magic Castle hotel and would not recommend it to friends.

  • Liked — The location is convenient for Hollywood sights and the Hollywood Bowl
  • Disliked — Cleanliness and condition of room, no elevator, wouldn't change traveller's cheques
  • Tips/Secrets: — Don't stay here! I don't know why it is rated #3 in LA!
