“Fantastic stay at a fantastic hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 28, 2012 via mobile

Fantastic hotel, outstanding staff, perfect retreat in the middle of a crazy place. We stayed for a week, including Christmas Day and every single person we came into contact with at Magic Castle Hotel went out of their way to make our stay memorable. From an early check in after a 26 hour flight from Australia to allowing us to get a real Christmas tree in our room for our children, nothing was ever too much trouble. Front desk staff were always friendly and greeted us on our return from a days adventures and Lisa and Joslin showed a genuine interest in our daily activities. We were in Room 211 upstairs overlooking the pool and it was great. There is some noise from adjoining rooms but this certainly didn't hinder our activities or sleep. Breakfast was great and we loved the Vegemite! Location was perfect for Hollywood Boulevard and Magic Castle and it was great to be able to walk to most places. When we had a problem with a tour company the staff at Magic Castle Hotel were helpful and supportive. Thank you Magic Castle Hotel for making our first trip to LA so wonderful. We will tell everyone we know how great it was and if we ever return to LA we know exactly where we will stay!

We stayed at this hotel for 3 nights. Motivated by the reviews on tripadvisor, we booked the hotel and had high expectations.
The hotel room we got (Room #119) was facing Franklin Blvd. which made it very noisy from the start. However, the noise problem was enforced by people staying one floor above. This should not be a normal situation but those people seemed to be running through the room for hours with heavy steps...creating great noise in our room.
The room itself is a fair value. It is not new but everything is in workable condition and the bed is very comfortable. The location of the hotel is great. 5 minutes to the Walk of fame... Madame Trussards, Kodak heater, Chinese theatre all reachable with an easy walk. Also the hotel provides a secure free parking which is great. Furthermore, you have PVC pharmacy and Fresh 'n Easy Supermarket are close if you need essentials...which come in handy. With the full kitchen in the hotel room.

Apart from the noise, the hotel is very neat. The staff is great. Very helpful and trying to make everything right.

The 3 stars are for room 119. If you get another room on the inside, you should be fine. Location and staff are 5 stars. If the room would be more quiet than what've had, this is a clear 5 stars.

Room Tip: Do not choose #119 or #219

We were told by friends who had just returned from LA that we had to stay in this hotel. We were so happy we took their advise. The staff make you feel so special you almost feel like you are the only people staying in the hotel. I cold not fault the room in any way. It had been recently renovated and was very clean. There was even a welcome card and some goodies on the table for us on arrival. We asked the staff if we had access to a washing machine there. They told us to bring the washing to reception and they would do it for us. Within 1 1/2 hours they bought it back to the room, washed, dried, ironed and folded. We were speechless! The free snacks and included breakfast makes it all the more special. It is walking distance from Hollywood boulevard. Anyone going to LA must seriously consider staying here.

We had always wondered after looking at the pictures of the hotel in tripadvisor, why is the hotel rated number 1 out of 301 hotels in LA? We read about the free snacks, wifi, good service and not that the price is cheap. We decided to take a chance and try it out.

We were not disappointed. From the moment we set foot on the property, the nice welcome drink, the nice genuine smile of every staff that we met and the cookies at the reception, we knew the answer.

The property looks nicer than on pictures and we are very happy with the size of our one bedroom apartment. The negative parts of our stay are the stair case leading up to our room 201, but no problem with the luggage with help from the staff, and the traffic noise (as our room is by the road) and the thin wall such that we could from our bedroom, hear people talking at their balcony.

The property is clean, very convenient and short walk to Hollywood boulevard (we are people that do not like to have to walk very far to our destination). The most attractive part of the hotel is the eat as much as you like snacks and drinks! We would tick the snacks and drinks that we like to have at end of each day and the staff will go into their store and come back with all our requests in a big black plastic bag and always with a nice smile which make us feel at ease (we were actually quite embarrassed being such gluttons and would expect to see impatient looks on their faces).

Thank you to all the staff for the exceptional service and Shawn for good recommendation of the activities, especially telling us about the Hollywood Christmas parade that day so that we could catch it on time and Lisa for her kind drawing of the map of the area near the hotel and dining recommendation.

Room Tip: Get a room far from the road. We do not have much choice as we want two double beds in the bedroom.

I stayed here recently for an event in Hollywood. First of all, this place was a real challenge to find since you can barely tell it's there. The entry is a small staircase off a very narrow driveway. I had to ask the valets at the Magic Castle twice for directions after driving by it. As far as I could tell all the routes in had stairways, and I didn't see any elevators for my room. So if you don't like using valets count on lugging your stuff up some steps.

I was given a room which was apparently part of a suite since it had double doors connecting to another unit. Both doors are supposed to be closed for security and soundproofing. However the door on my side was jammed open, and I couldn't budge it. Late at night I heard the couple next door returning (through the also not-so-soundproof window), Once they went in the room I could hear their "interaction" quite plainly through the door. It's hard to sleep through that!

You can tell this is an old hotel, but that's not necessarily bad. They need to update the bathroom fixtures. The shower has the old two-handle hot and cold controls. I haven't seen that in a hotel in years! The anti-skid pads were also peeling off.

On the plus side the staff is well-coached to be very courteous. You can't beat it to be close to stuff on Hollywood Boulevard. Free snacks are nice but not a big deal to me. If you are interested in going to the private Magic Castle, this is the only hotel that can get you in.

We stayed 8 nights at the Magic Castle Hotel in a spacious suite with a separate bedroom and a balcony on the top floor with a view on the pool. That was great. Other miracles? The friendliness of the staff, the free snacks (we have never seen that before), the breakfast and the service. Everything for a very reasonable price (parking only $11). Magic.

Room Tip: Ask for a suite with a balcony ($25) in the pool area

When booking, query where your room location is as we had a room overlooking the road and noise is non-stop making sleep difficult (even after a 15 hr flight). Friends who stayed at the same time loved it but there room was set at the back of the motel behind the pool. Apart from this reasonably inconvenient aspect, staff were fantastic to the extent that our daughter was suspicious that they were being too friendly - they were genuinely nice!
Wouldn't stay again in the room we had, but would stay in the one our friends received.

Room Tip: Don't stay next to the room

HotelManager, General Manager at Magic Castle Hotel, responded to this review, December 26, 2012
Thank you for writing a review of your experience at the Magic Castle Hotel. I was happy to read that you enjoyed the service and other aspects of the hotel. I’m sorry that there was too much noise for you coming from the road. Your comments don’t mention if you had stated this issue to our staff during your stay. I do know that if you had mentioned it to us, we would have done everything possible to get you a new room that was quiet. You give good advice to TripAdvisor readers who might be concerned with noise from the road. Most of our suites do not face the main street, however please feel free to request a suite that doesn’t face the street and we’ll do everything we can to accommodate you.

I hope we see you again so we can make sure you have a suite that is right for you. Thank you very much for staying with us.

Sincerely
Darren Ross
