“surprisingly quiet and quaint but so close to everything”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 28, 2013 via mobile

We loved staying so close to the boardwalk. It was very easy to walk to everything. The hotel was clean and cute! Would stay here again! The staff was nice and catered to us at the rooftop bar. The rooftop bar got packed so if you want to enjoy it make a reservation! They will take special care of you since you are staying at the hotel.

Stayed at the Erwin over Christmas 2012 recommended by our agent. After a long flight from London, all we wanted was dinner and a comfy bed. First impressions weren't good. The hotel matches its Venice location by being a little "edgy" (manga style murals not our thing). Unfortunately, we were given a very poor room on the third floor (small, grotty and next to the lift shaft), looking into an alley with a live band playing in the shop opposite. If we'd been stuck wi the original room, we'd not have stayed for more than one night. The restaurant was closed too (it was the Cougar Town wrap/Christmas party) and bumping into Courtney Cox in the lift was little consolation (though has been great story of our trip)! We considered moving hotels, but Ryan on the front desk sorted things.
We were moved to a room on the fifth floor which was much better for the night, then moved again the following morning to a partial ocean view suite (again on the 5th floor no full ocean views available), which was a great improvement for a discounted upgrade fee and given complimentary valet parking. Ryan - you turned our trip around!
Location was good for the sounds and sights of Venice, though if this is not your thing, then try hotels in Santa Monica.
Barlo was great for breakfast - try the breakfast tacos, the eggs benedict or the lox.
Roof terrace great to catch views of the ocean.
Overall, choose the right room (the higher and further away from the main street and closer the the ocean the better) and you'll enjoy your stay and the staff are friendly and accommodating.

Room Tip: The higher the floor and closer to the ocean the better.

We were so pleasantly surprised by this hotel. From the outside, it didn't look like much, but once inside...my opinion changed dramatically. The staff was EXCEPTIONAL. Miguel at the front desk was beyond helpful and his level of service was far above and beyond what I expected. The room was comfortable and met all of our needs nicely. The restaurant in the lobby had surprisingly great food, and once again, exceptional staff. This hotel clearly cares about guest comfort and approval. I would highly recommend Hotel Erwin to anyone wanted to stay in Venice Beach and be feet from the boardwalk.

Room Tip: The rooms have small decks that look out to a partial beach view. We were on the "sunset"...

We originally booked our stay at Hotel Erwin because the rates were much lower than anything in the Santa Monica area, where we had to stay for part of our trip, and I'm glad we made this decision! We booked two rooms through Priceline and got a great rate with the pay-in-advance option.

The hotel is in an awkward location (traffic-wise) for arrival and the valet area was usually quite busy and hard to get into, but that was really the only drawback! Once inside, it was a very clean, modern hotel with a lot of personality. All of the staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful.

We had a 3rd floor partial ocean view room and had a perfect view of the setting sun from where we were. Unfortunately we stayed there on a Saturday night when the bar across the alley has live, outdoor music so it was a little hard to sleep through the singing drunks, but any other day of the week should not have been a problem.

The rooms themselves were beautiful. Hotel decorating is usually pretty atrocious but Hotel Erwin had colorful, minimalist rooms with unique artwork. We felt very comfortable there. The bathtubs looked a little old as they are leftover from the previous chain who owned the property, but the amazing shower more than made up for it! The in-room green leopard print robes were a fun touch.

The location was the highlight of the hotel. It's right in the heart of Venice Beach, and literally on the beach. It was so convenient to browse the shops, swing back in for our swimsuits, have a beach day, and then quickly shower before dinner, a number of options which were also just around the corner.

We ate breakfast at the hotel and it was outstanding. I had the potato eggs benedict both days - I didn't want to try anything else because I was so impressed the first time around.

My husband was very dissatisfied with the "gym" - a small, hot utility room with only a couple machines - but Muscle Beach was just outside so there were other options.

We did run into a few technical difficulties while we were there - the TV would not connect in one room, we could not access wi-fi, our keys stopped working two hours before check-out - but all were promptly corrected by the front-desk staff.

If staying here on a weekend, be prepared to take the stairs instead of the elevator. Quite a crowd goes to the rooftop bar and it takes forever to get an elevator, but it's not a big hotel so the stairs are quick.

We'd definitely stay here again if we are back in the area!

Room Tip: Choose the full ocean view so you're not facing the loud bar across the alley.

My stay was phenomenal! This is a great place to go for business or leisure travelers alike. The only downside is that there's really no lobby, but given the location, you shouldn't be spending much time in the hotel anyway.

I was in the Los angeles area for a tryout and decided to stay by the beach & I found this great hotel. the Erwin is perfect location not to far from anything I had to do while in town. The look of the hotel was great - Very modern, clean and with lots of light, the rooms are nice and comfortable. I was able to get up to the Rooftop bar once during my stay for Sunset which was great and I ate at barlo a few times the food was so good... don't miss getting the Barlo Burger 7 Fries The hotel staff are all very nice especially Nicole at the front desk.

Room Tip: try to stay on the 5th or 6th floor
