“Authentic Italian Gem in Encino”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 18, 2011

Loved Cafe Carolina! Don't let its simple storefront space deceive you. There is a hidden gem of a chef lurking behind the curtain! His name is Giuseppe Dossi and I made a point of finding our more about him, once I had my first taste. My instincts were right...this man has quite a background and experience. And what's more shocking for an Italian restaurant is that they offer a variety of vegan dishes and everything is organic and healthy. When was the last time you saw tofu or anything gluten-free in such authentic guise? My sliced steak in a green peppercorn sauce was incredibly tender and tasty. I tasted one of my fellow diner's braised lamb shank...to die for! Unfortunately the night we dined there, the pizza oven was awaiting repair, but pizzas are big items on the menu. Everything is quite reasonably priced for the first rate quality and chef-prepared fare. There's a marvelous cheese course, as well as some of the most tempting desserts I've seen. Cafe Carolina is definitely on my list from now on when visiting Los Angeles, and I can't wait to go back. The only thing I would change, (and this is a designer talking now) is the lighting....the somewhat glaring "diner" atmosphere does not match the high standards of the food. It certainly can have a far more romantic ambience quite easily. The food deserves that!
