My girlfriend and I recently visited LA and stayed at the Hilton Universal City during our trip. We wanted to be close to Universal Studios to make the most out of our visit and figured that the Hilton would be a good choice.
The hotel itself is in a great location, around 5-10 minutes walk away from University Citywalk. We used the valet parking when arriving at the hotel and there were plenty of bell staff to help unload our luggage and get us to the check in desk.
Throughout the entire stay the staff at the hotel were really very helpful. They did pretty much everything to make our stay enjoyable. When we checked in we were given access to the executive lounge (as I'm a Hilton HHonors member which was a nice touch) and were escorted to the elevator with our luggage by the check in clerk.
The room was large and well appointed, with an excellent work area - which I felt a little odd as I didn't expect business people to check in to a hotel so close to an obviously touristy area. The room was clean and had a nice seating area away from the main sleeping area. The bathroom was also nice and very clean, although the shower was quite dated.
After sorting out our things we visited the executive lounge on the 21st floor as they were serving evening appetisers. The executive lounge was a good size, although owing to the appetisers was quite busy. We found ourselves a table near the window and helped ourselves to the meatballs, cheese and bread snacks on offer. Overall I was really impressed with the executive lounge and the staff who made sure everyone had what they needed.
When we returned to our room it was really hot inside. We made sure that the air conditioning was on full (which it was) and, as the sun was shining directly on our room we closed the curtains to try and cut out some of the heat. We went down to the pool for an hour to give the room time to cool down.
The pool area was overrun with children. It wasn't a relaxing area, but given that we were close by Universal City we expected it to be busy. There were a number of sun loungers and gazebos available for use and plenty of towels available poolside. The pool itself was quite large with a deep area and two shallow areas to swim in. The deeper area was roped off and this encouraged younger children to stay in the shallow areas to play.
When we got back to the room the temperature was still pretty warm and we noticed that a fruit basket had been delivered as a welcome gift - this was a nice touch. As we went out to eat on the Universal Citywalk and asked someone at reception to check our air conditioning was functioning correctly and explained that the room was quite hot
When we got back the room was still quite warm, but the temperature was a lot cooler than before we went for food. We were assured by the hotel staff that there wasn't a fault with the air conditioning and were offered to move rooms if it was still too hot. As the temperature was bearable and given we were only staying 1 night we decided to stay in our current room and turn in.
In the morning we had a quick breakfast in the executive lounge and checked out of the hotel. At the reception desk the clerk apologised for the initial problem with the room temperature and asked whether we'd had any further problems with the temperature of the room. This was a nice touch and showed us that our earlier enquiry had been taken seriously.
Overall the Hilton Universal City was a good hotel in a great location for visiting Universal Studios. I would certainly consider this hotel again if visiting Universal Studios, but I don't think I'd stay here if visiting other areas of LA on business owing to the large number of children in the hotel.
