This hotel is above average given its location near the airport. I've often found that hotels near the airport are often dungy and un-kept - that was not the case with the Marriott at LAX.
That being said, the service was quite poor:
- We called the morning of our arrival to ask if our room could be available for early check-in. We were assured that it would be no problem. Upon arrival 3 hours later, we were surprised to find that our room was not available, and we had to be down-graded to a lesser room in order to check-in early. The front desk person was so rude that I almost asked to speak with the manager, until I realized that the rude person WAS the front desk manager!
- I didn't have access to a car in LA (I know, I'm crazy) so I needed to know how to reach my office via public transportation. I asked twice, and twice I was promised a call back in my room once they found someone who could answer my question (no one knew their way around LA, and no one had a bus map?!)
- Overall, we felt that they are used to people staying either for conferences (which means they didn't have a choice where to stay) or only for one night (if their flight was cancelled). So they don't care to ensure repeat customers since most of their business is one-time only.
Some positives:
- Wonderful pool area, very clean (and I'm picky!) and not that busy (it's mostly business travelers who are in a conference all day long) - this was the hotel's biggest plus as far as we were concerned
- Starbucks in lobby (very convenient)
- Very comfy beds
