I've stayed at all 3+ star rated hotels at LAX and I must say that the Renaissance is among the best, if not top 2-3.
I've stayed here at least four different occasions both as a Marriott Rewards general member and now as a Platinum member. Although the service is far superior as a Platinum, I've always received service that meets or exceeds (sometimes even far exceeds my expectations), a clean room, and comfortable stay.
As a Platinum member the staff at the front desk always recognizes my status and thanks me for being a member. They always give me access to the executive lounge and provide me with upgrades when available. On my last stay the hotel was full, so I received just a standard room, but on my stay before that I received a nice suite upgrade. In fact, once over Labor Day weekend 2012 while staying on a free night I received an upgrade to a junior suite! The best was during a weekend stay I inquired about the lounge being open (it closes Friday night and does not open again until Monday morning). The front desk associate was super nice and even offered me a free breakfast voucher to the restaurant, which I thought was an extremely nice gesture! At the Marriott I have NEVER been upgraded to a suite as a Platinum, so this is a big turnoff to me.
The decor is contenporary and much nicer than most of the rather old and somewhat rundown hotel rooms near LAX. The beds are very comfortable and on my last stay. The suites have a nice love seat, but even the regular rooms have a comfortable char with a leg rest that is great for watching TV or reading.
The hotel has both a gym, pool and jacuzzi. The pool is very small, but has quite a few chaise lounge chairs availalbe. It's nice to see they have a jacuzzi as well, but it simply too small for more than 3-4 people. The gym features about 4 treadmills and weights. Although it's small there's enough there to get you through most workouts.
The restaurant breakfast was outstanding. The omellett station was wonderful, and even offered cooked to order waffles with both maples syrup and a straberry sauce. There was a hidden shef near it with some great pasteries and croissants. The buffet also featured eggs, sausage, bacon, oatmeal, and a selection of fruit. The staff even brings you a whole carafe of coffee instead of just a cup. The service was also very friendly and attentive. Although I would not pay $22 for the breakfast buffet. I defintely think you would not come away dissappointed.
The club lounge breakfast wasn't quite what I expected when compared to the Marriott. There were not scrambled eggs (only hard boiled) and the hot items were just not up to the standard at the Marriott. They had fresh fruits, oatmeal and some pasteries, but it just wasn't as large an offering as I expected. The lounge is also on the smaller side and doesn't have the spectacular view that the Marriott has.
What the Renaissance lacks vs. the Marriott is made up for with superb service, a hip, stylish decor, and access to upgrades. I really feel like I'm treated when I stay here and I think this hotel is among the top near LAX for the decor. Finally, I think it's great that on Thursday nights they feature a live jazz band in the lobby bar!
Stay on Thursday night for the live jazz band in the lobby bar!
