If you need a cheap place to stay downtown, this is great--$60 through priceline. Not the most updated place, but perfectly fine, especially for the price.

I had read several reviews of the Bonaventure and was not sure what to expect. As reported by another reviewer, the first room assignment (on the 21st floor) was right next to the elevator. We asked to be changed and our request was handled very promptly and we relocated to the 22nd floor. The room offered a great view of the city. As mentioned in other reviews, the bed was "heavenly"!
The hotel was easier to negotiate than I thought--even with all the elevators and 35 floors! Just remember your tower color and you can make it back!
The small restaurants on the 4th level are a much better deal for breakfast and lunch as opposed to the hotel-owned restaurants.
It is worth the trip to the revolving lounge atop the Bonaventure---the drinks are a little pricey but the views of the city are excellent.
We found the staff to be extremely professional and helpful and courteous.
The convention we attended made good use of all the facilities----the outside pool plaza, various meeting rooms and the ballroom.
We did get in some sightseeing but the traffic is something else!!
I took my mother to LA for her 70th birthday. We didn't rent a car and wanted to stay downtown because we had tickets to a concert at the Walt Disney Concert Hall. I chose the Bonaventure from this website and was not disappointed. The staff was excellent--very friendly and helpful. While the decor of the room was a little dated, the views from the huge windows of our suite were wonderful, and it was so helpful to have two bathrooms and a door to close between rooms. Everything was clean and the staff promptly brought up whatever we asked for. Having shops and many small restaurants on the various floors of the lobby area was also a plus. We came to LA partly for the architecture, it was a joy to stay in a hotel with such an interesting, open, modern design.
Staying twice at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel and Suites...it has a nice lobby, good scenery, overall, feels very big and high-class. Elevators are cool with 4 towers of elevators. Shops and restaurants are plentiful in this hotel.
On the room...a basic room has all the basic amenties. A little run down in my opinion, with holes in the walls and just wear and tear over the years. For my bathroom, I threw up in the sink (just a few chunks of chicken), and the next morning, it was draining very slow. Tub was draining slow for my shower, too (no I didn't throw up in the tub). The shower was a HIGH Pressure double-headed monster (which is good). Walls are very thin (25th floor, the Starwood Preferred Floor).
I don't know why people make such a fuss!
After planning a 4 day trip to LA and San Diego in late June, I ended up booking two rooms at the Westin Bonaventure because of the location and close proximity to both Santa Monica Fwy and the Hollywood Fwy.
Then I found out about the existence of tripadvisor.com and read some of the negative reviews here. Having already pre-paid for the rooms, I couldn't cancel and was very very nervous about our stay at the hotel. Turns out, there was nothing to worry about.
Yes - the hotel is a little too "urban" and can come accross as very crowded. But at the same token, the floors were quiet. The check-in was fast and efficient and we got both of the rooms on one floor, close to each other. It is true that you could potentially lose your way around the floor because of the different towers, but it's not THAT big of a deal.
Both rooms were great, clean and well decorated. They were a little small and oddly-shaped but not to a point where it bothered us. The view was beautiful, especially at night (well, we were lucky to be up high in the building).
Here comes the most wonderful part of the hotel though - the HEAVENLY beds! What an appropriate word to describe my sleep there. Super-extra-comfortable, luxurious, warm, cozy, soft...
Not any less wonderful are the heavenly showers which make you want to stay in the shower cabin all day long. The bathrooms are beautiful, spacious enough and equipped. Note to ladies - take shampoo and soap from home because my girlfriend claimed that the soap and shampoo smelled like a guy's cologne.
Overall the hotel presents good value if you get discount room rates (we paid $150 per night per room). It's great to be able to get on the two highways close by and be in Hollywood in 15 minutes or in Santa Monica in 30.
The one major downside is the mandatory $20 per day valet parking.
