I was just looking for a place downtown since I was going to a party down there anyway. I got a great rate on Priceline (about half of the current rate), so for the money, it was an excellent hotel. But if I was paying the regular rate, I would have been disappointed. The Heavenly bed was not as nice as the one I slept on in Vegas last month, with far fewer pillows and just not as soft. The room and bathroom was long-overdue for a remodel, definitely an original. I would say it was a solid 3 star room, but not up to 4 star standards. The service and and lobby were very nice. The architecture is definitely interesting, as is walking from one end of a floor to the other, winding around the different columns. We were on the 30th floor, so we had a nice view of downtown, and glass elevators were quick and scenic. There are a number of restaurants and eateries in the atrium and across the street. Many of which rely on the downtown businesses, so they may only be open during the work week, but some are open every day.
The location is only a few blocks walk to the red and blue line subway station, which gives you good access to Hollywood and Universal Studios, as well as LAX access via the blue and green lines. You can also get to San Diego and Disneyland via the red line to Union Station. So you could theoretically stay here and not have to rent a car to see most of Southern California, although Santa Monica and Venice beach access would require a bus or car. But personally, I hate driving, LA traffic is very ugly(even nights and weekends can be a pain depending on when and where you are going), and parking is not cheap (especially downtown). If staying downtown is an option, this is a good place to stay if you can get a good deal on the room. Otherwise, wait for a remodeled room or get a suite if you want a 4 star experience here.
