I recently stayed three nights at the Omni Hotel in downtown Los Angeles for a business conference. While the hotel is comfortable enough on the surface (and has a hip, relaxing indoor-outdoor bar), there were a few deficiencies that bring my rating down a notch or two.
The majority of my complaints relate to the room I was sharing with one other person. It was a spacious double with comfy beds, but the lighting was completely inadequate. Outside of the bathroom, there was no place to do makeup or hair – a relatively minor inconvenience, but made us appreciate bathrooms with a separate sink and vanity area. The large (and outdated) bedside lamp was barely sufficient for reading, and there was no lighting in the entryway/closet area, making it difficult to pick out clothes.
This leads to my second complaint – lack of mirrors. Aside from the one in the bathroom, the only other one was a full-length mirror in the hall closet, which, as mentioned above, had inadequate lighting to be of much use. The hotel could easily replace the artwork over the desk with a large mirror.
As for the shower, I had no complaints – good water pressure and temperature – but the bathtub was another story. On the second day of the conference, I briefly returned to the room at lunchtime and discovered a mysterious black dirt covering the bottom of the tub. In a rush to attend another meeting, I didn’t have time to report the problem with housekeeping, but by the time we returned in the evening, the dirt was gone. Needless to say, I was not going to be taking a bath!
I point out these deficiencies because I think what is ultimately a very solid and comfortable hotel, simply needs to pay more attention to the finer details and upgrades that many business travelers have come to expect.
I should add that some of my colleagues at the conference also had a variety of complaints, including key cards that didn’t work, a dirty shower, and one unpleasant situation that required an embarrassing room change in the middle of the night. For the most part, however, the hotel responded professionally and provided appropriate compensation.
