“Impressive and impressed”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 1, 2013

I'm not easily impressed by hotels, but The Palomar has easily impressed me. Checkin was smooth, the room is great, the bathroom even better, and the small touches go as far a the big ones. Travel isn't just about the destination but also the people you meet along the way. The hosted wine hour is a great concept - it allows like-minded travelers (often those who have booked after reading TA reviews!) to meet each other :) Nothing has been too much trouble, and the level of service by all staff has been exceptional. The surrounding area is lovely and has a "safe feel" about it, and there's plenty of eateries and cares in the nearby Westwood Village area. I would happily return here next LA visit!

G'day Pennae!

Thanks for staying with us while travelling from down under! I loved hearing that you were able to meet some of our other guests during wine hour, that's what it's all about!

Pointing out a problem with a hotel is uncomfortable. How about a hotel that looks for problems, anticipates them and takes care of them BEFORE you have to say anything. A reservation problem came up when we arrived. The Palomar had made substantial arrangements to correct it, BEFORE we arrived. There were stains on the bed skirt and one of the sliding doors was inoperable. We never mentioned any of it and both were corrected. Our 4th morning in the Blvd 16 restaurant, our waitress from the 1st 3 mornings noticed that one of us was eating something that she recalled was something we didn't like. Even though she wasn't our waitress that morning, she took care of it and corrected an order mistake we never mentioned. This is the makings of a bad commercial, but it is nonetheless what we experienced. The staff knew our names. The staff treated us like celebrities, and we know that we were treated like celebrities because they treated us EXACTLY like the celebrities that were in the Palomar at the time. Side by side at the front desk, valets or restaurant, they always treated everyone equally. They don't care who is who. They treat all their guests the same. You can't buy advertising like this, but we experienced it! The hotel prides itself on comfort, they make sure you feel at home. The wine hours were great and their lobby provided lots of place for people to mingle and strike up a conversations. The restaurant was amazing (but expensive). The staff is hard to describe, but they were the absolute best we have ever seen, able, ready, keen and always happy. Kimptons stand out to begin with, but this place was just fabulous. The heated pool was also nice. The front desk will provide you with first hand knowledge of all you want to know about L.A., no matter your interests. Don't miss the Palomar.

Room Tip: Get a suite, make sure you get a package with breakfast (it is totally worth it!)

I love Kimpton hotels. This is my second experience with them and they do not disappoint.

My biggest pet peeve.... Nickel and diming for Internet..... Free wifi Internet if you sign for their in touch membership. And it's not dial up speed like some free Internet I've had before. 19.18mbps down, although the upload was a paltry 0.67.

You also get $10 in free credit to raid the mini bar if you are an In Touch member. Don't know any other hotel chain that does that.

They also have free wine everyday 5-6p. They even had some scallop appetizer. Too bad I don't like scallop, it looked promising. They also had some awesome warm apple cider. It was the best cider I've ever had. Perfect amount of sweetness and they don't try to hide the inadequacies with too much spice. Also free coffee and hot chocolate in the mornings 6-10a.

The service is top notch. Even got a goldfish for my kids. They love it! The rooms and facilities have a slight edge to them without going overboard. The facilities are clean and modern. Even the extra cot was much nicer quality then other places.

The only negative is that the valet parking is a rip off..... Oh we'll guess you can't have it all. Don't have a problem paying for a great experience. It's actually probably a great deal compared to comparable venues, service, experiences, etc.

After 2 nights there I have one not-so-good thing... the bed was just average. Very springy and bouncy. Great for the kids to jump on but not the best for a good nights sleep. 3 stars.

Also must mention that the hot chocolate in the morning was some of the best I've ever had. Made from scratch with melted dark chocolate and milk. 5 stars!!

I will be staying at Kimpton whenever I can in the future.

Dear Nahlalee,

Well it looks like we passed the pet peeve test! As mentioned...Wifi is complimentary when you're an Intouch member as well as the other perks like "Raid the Mini-Bar."

I'm so happy you enjoyed our world famous wine hour and hope to see you again soon!

We will definitely stay here again! Our vista suite with the oversized bathroom was perfect for a long weekend stay.

The hotel is close to Santa Monica and Brentwood. Great vibe here! Helpful and friendly staff. A fine example of a LA boutique hotel.

I am a Kimpton hotel convert. This hotel is in the mold - interesting, funky, great service throughout and a wonderful walking location next to Westwood Village and UCLA. The hotel restaurant, Blvd 16 is very good. Additionally there are great restaurants within a five to ten minute walk.

Given hotel prices in LA, this hotel is simply outstanding in quality and price. I stayed over 2 years ago and quite honestly expected it to have declined somewhat. In fact, the opposite happened much to my happiness. Firstly their staff are even more polite, friendly and helpful. Secondly they now have a 'wine hour' for all guests in the lobby from 5-6pm. GREAT idea ! to have 'something extra' that other hotels don't have.

I had to book in very last minute and found a deal online for under $199 per night. Modern looking styled hotel, quality beds, linens and towels. No dirty shower grout or paint chips on the baseboards or tables.

I think some improvements could be
1. to offer breakfast included price and have breakfast run till 11:00am, especially over the weekend.
2. Also they may look into getting a few more sun loungers and lights on their makeup mirrors.
3. have a guide on the TV that shows the actually SHOWS not just the channels.

But seriously, this is a great find. Superbe location right next to freeway, and reasonable distance to the beach.
Their valet is the ONLY thing that lets them down at $38/night with not many other parking options. Ouch!

Green Features: GREAT! Keep it up. ALL bins in my hotel room were recycling which is great but we do need one for 'trash' so people don't have to sort through it.

We had an all-around great stay at the Hotel Palomar in Westwood. The lobby was both relaxing and upbeat, and the front desk staff was exceedingly friendly and professional. In fact, everyone at the hotel with whom we came into contact, was gracious and helpful. Our room wasn't huge, but it was clean and comfortable; we had a UCLA patient rate, so the cost was very reasonable. The resataraunt is not cheap, but the food, made with many fresh and local ingredients, is delicious and well-worth the price (we had numerous meals there). The location is great! The walk to UCLA/Mattel Children's Hospital is a breeze (10-15 minutes) and the hotel is right on the bus line - so, when we had a chance, we easily (and cheaply) rode to Beverly Hills and Santa Monica.

If your are staying in Westsood, I highly recommend the Hotel Palomar.
