My son and I were making a quick visit to LA for campus tours and after having enjoyed a luxurious 3-week family vacation in Europe, I decided I would venture to check out some lodging in the less than 3-star range. I discovered the Travelodge Hollywood. The layout is the typical 50's U-shaped, 3-story structure with outdoor hallways and pool in the middle of the parking lot. It was a great departure from what we had been staying in, but for 1 night I thought I could maybe, probably, hopefully tolerate it. What the heck, if it turned out to be really bad we would sleep in the luxe car we had reserved. When we pulled in the driveway, I felt we had gone back to my early childhood. It was the typical retro-motel-style with the big sign out in front. I loved it! The rooms, bathrooms, pool and landscaping were all neat and clean and the front desk staff was very pleasant, and accomodating (unlike other reviews I had read...maybe they hired all new help!) and attentive. The continental breakfast was only muffins and coffee as I recall, but other than that, it was a comfortable place to stay at a cost of only a tad over $100.00, taxes included. I think we would do it again!

  • Liked — Value, retro feel, location near Greek theatre.
  • Disliked — Continental breakfast.

When we got to the hotel my husband did the check-in and they told us that our reservation wasn't valid anymore. After talking they gave us a room smoking instead of non smoking for the same price that we booked online. The room was good it didn't smell bad or anything and it was clean.

There was a pool in the parking lot. The "breakfest" was brioche pack individually every morning.

I would go back for a short visit . We were not to far from everything.

This is a great little motel, and offers tremendous value at under $100 a night. Room was exceedingly clean without signs of wear or those odd smells that older motels often attract. Microwave, small fridge, safe, new TVs in the room. Half-block walk to the subway. Acceptable Thai restaurant next door. Close to the Tiki Ti -- the last great, authentic tiki bar in Los Angeles. Pleasant managers and housekeeping staff. Speedy wireless internet. (Mention if you need it and the manager will put you in a room closer to the hub for more reliable wifi service.) As for breakfast -- walk two blocks up Vermont to the coffee shop and forget what's in the lobby.

The Vermont/Sunset Travelodge was a great location for exploring LA by transit, as I did this trip. It is, I'd guess, no more than 100 yards from the entrance to the Vermont/Sunset Red Line (subway) station, which has trains to Hollywood and Downtown LA. You can also catch frequent buses from there to Hollywood, the Fairfax District, Beverly Hills, and other areas. I've stayed without a car in various locations in LA--this is one of the best. It would work fine with a car too, assuming you're prepared to deal with heavy central LA traffic.

The motel is also a short walk from the motel up Vermont Ave. to the lively, trendy Los Feliz commercial district, which has restaurants, a movie theatre, a fine bookstore, boutiques etc. You can also reach eateries walking west on Sunset Boulevard or Fountain Avenue. If I'd wanted to, I could have walked to a different good breakfast place each of my 3 mornings (I took the bus to other restaurants on 2 mornings instead).

The area is definitely more grit than glamour, and you should always be aware of who's around you . But I didn't feel unsafe. There are 3 hospitals adjacent to the motel--they may not be the best uses for livening up the street--but their presence means that people are always around. There were always people around catching buses--people who provided "eyes on the street."

As a motel, the Travelodge was fine. It was clean, it was quiet, despite the traffic on Vermont Ave. (most rooms face an interior parking lot rather than the street--not scenic but fairly quiet). The room was dark enough at night and had adequate lighting. Perfectly fine bed. The shower/bath hardware seemed a little flimsy, I feared a bit that i'd damage it, but I didn't. Each time I came back to the room there was "motel smell"--presumably cleaning products--but briefly running the air conditioning eliminated it. The Travelodge is definitely no frills--no heat lamp in the bathroom, no bathrobe, no array of soaps. I found the TV setup sort of baffling . The outdoor walkways of the motel were stained.

But as others have said it's much cheaper than anything decent that's around. It's hard to get a good room in central LA for under $100. If I wanted to visit central LA, especially car free, and try to save some money, I'd definitely go back.

We stayed here for 3 nights in April 2007. Friendly staff. Clean comfortable rooms. Great location. Highly recommended.

We didn't do their breakfasts - minimal pastries and orange juice - but it's only a short walk (a couple of small blocks) to Fred 62. Which did great breakfasts.
