This was a strange, but satisfying, stay from start to finish. The front desk people were very nice but explained that the pool would close at 3pm for a private event. It was about 1:30pm, I do understand that check in time was not until 3pm, so we were early. We quickly changed into swim suits, and rushed down, we really wanted to go in this historic pool! As we arrived, we were told the pool was closed. We asked really nicely if we could just briefly check it out. There were people setting up for the event who were obviously kind of mad at the sight of tourists with kids arriving and trying to swim. We did take a quick dip, but were pretty much glared out. Oh well, we did get a brief look. We were mildly dissapointed that our room did not face the famous Hollywood Blvd, but that feeling went away quickly as we watched some sort of red carpet being rolled out in the valet parking area below us. We joked that we might see "stars" ! We went about our day enjoying the area and all its wierdness. The hotel was a SUPER spot to be based to see all the action. The stores, the food, the famous sites, the new complex across the street, etc. This hotel is totally Hollywood. The elegance of the lobby, the ballrooms (you can peek in), the lounge, even the pool area, were fabulous. When we returned to the hotel, tired and a little overwhelmed, we discovered that there really WAS a red carpet affair going on in the pool area and there were in fact stars present. We actually got to take pictures from our room of people arriving. This was way cool, need I say more. My husband and I took turns going downstairs and standing with the real photographers. We never saw anyone except some dude I later learned was Magic Don Juan. (?) A lady in the restroom who was obviously leaving the party told me it was a party hosted by E! for Hugh Heffner and his lady friends. Wow. Overall, this night was pretty unforgetable. The next day, the lobby was closed because they were filming something! The hotel room was very modernly funished, low beds, a sitting couch, a nice desk, a big closet. I paid $189 for a room with two double beds. Yeah it was a little small, but this is an old hotel. It has been uniquely redone. A doorman told us they are striving to get away from the touristy crowd and recapture the "hotel of the stars" status. The lobby was unsurpassed in its elegance and overall ambiance, sort of dark and gloomy, but upscale like a castle. Cleanliness was great, bathroom was nice and even had great shampoo and conditioner! We were travelling with kids, and this hotel wasn't exactly very kid friendly, but that was OK with us. The service was OK, kind of snotty but this is Hollywood. I would stay again, hopefully without the kids!
