The Roosevelt is amazing.

I usually stay at The Standard downtown, but they were all booked up this trip. I had been itching to try the Hollywood Roosevelt for awhile now, and they did not disappoint.

*Just so you have a bit of background on me, I am not a "hipster". I like hotels with style and personality. I don't drink or party (out of all the times I have been to The Standard - never once visited the famed rooftop bar). I used to work in hotel management and I am very picky about service. That being said, I am a little iffy about these online review sites. If I am having a terrible stay, I prefer to take it up with the hotel management directly, at the time of service, instead seething about it later. But if a hotel is truly great, I do think they deserve a public shout-out. My public shout-out to The Roosevelt is as follows:

First and foremost, the hotel is simply gorgeous, a true balance of old and new California. There is a lot of history to this place, and they did a great job of preserving the historical aspects and sprucing it up at the same time. The courtyard-like lobby is stunning.

Our room was perfect, clean, comfy, cozy. Loved the Kiehl's products in the room.

Because we didn't dine or drink at the hotel, I cannot speak to the service in the restaurant or bars. The front desk, bellmen, valet, and housekeeping were all superb however. Warm and welcoming but not too stuffy. The front desk helped with my many queries and were quite friendly and knowledgeable.

This frequent traveler will definitely be back.

I had stayed here before in a cabana room - now was in a standard room. Cabana Rooms are around the pool and are much more sizeable (especially taking into account the prices here). Room was clean but on the small side.

Some major changes though at the Tropicana Pool/Lounge. The very unfriendly new Manager (I think she started in October 2007) was still there. Having job interviews at the location, not offering applicants a drink - saying things out loud like "well he's not going to be hired"... two seconds after that applicant walks out....
- not the place that seems to show the appropirate respect to everybody -.

Ordering food in the lounge and asking for wine an water, getting a bottle of "Voss"
- not exactly the way off selling up -.

$17 cocktails are now the norm but Bartenders not willing to muddle your lime and mint for your Mojito?
- not good - .

Needing to pay an open tab because your waitress goes on break and you are still very much having bites and drinks?
- not good - .

A waitress who is wearing a legging with three holes in it?
- not good -.

Security guards that walk around the pool area in a black suit to make you feel "safe" -
- Not the kind of atmosphere I like for my vacation or business meeting -

Being stopped at the hostess stand around lunchtime and being "welcomed" with the words "are you staying here?" When answering no - being declined access because it is "reservations only" - (it isn't and wasn't even full - and I dress appropriately)
- not good -

$10 for 24-hours of internet? It was free in 2007... Power plugs that aren't working in both the rooms and at the poolside bar.

Maybe it is time for getting some service minded people back in - and cut your hip and trendy attitude? Thanks.... It was a little hidden gem in '07 - with over 20 celebrities sightings in one week - now it looked more like Myrtle Beach during spring break...

I recommended the Roosevelt to a friend who was in town and coming to LA for the first time. The main reason was the location, in that we could walk to everything, also because I wanted to hang around the pool all day, and go to Teddy's at night. The front desk staff were ridiculously rude and full of attitude when we attempted to check in early, so we went to the pool, where the hostess gave us a hard time getting in, and then some guy in a Fedora hat with a little spiral notebook informed us we were not likely to get poolside chairs until 4 p.m. as they were all booked (despite the fact that nobody appeared to be sitting in them). The hostess promptly seated us at the worst table available, which was right next to a bad speaker that was blaring Bon Jovi. The clientele around the pool were total skanks, many of them topless to show off their silicone, I suppose. They appeared to be understaffed that day and it took an hour or longer for the server to bring drinks (which were $16 each). If you're going to spend $400 to hang out by a pool all day, you expect better service. Then we get into our room, which had only 2 towels for the three of us, a bathroom that was so tiny when you sat on the toilet your knees hit the wall, nail polish stains on the carpet, and a smoke detector hanging out of the ceiling by its wires (and we're told this was an upgrade). We showed up at Teddy's at around 1:30 a.m., and were told that we weren't "on the list." I explained we were hotel guests, and we were still turned away. Considering we paid to stay at the hotel, and that there was only a half hour left until the bar closed, I called the front desk to complain and was told by the gentleman who answered, "Just because you're a guest doesn't guarantee entry into Teddy's...that's just the way it is..." Subsequently went to the Beverly Wilshire the next night, which is a MUCH nicer hotel, and was treated like royalty by the staff there - and they actually DO have something to be pretentious about!

Always wanted to try this hotel during one of my concert trips down to Hollywood. Checked in before heading to the venue and found the air conditioner did not work. Went back to the front desk, explained I was in a hurry and asked if I could have another room. The clerk told me I could not be moved to another room and she would send a maintenance man by. Maintenance came by was able to get it running-great except I ended leaving a half hour behind schedule! Went to the valet station to get my car, took over 20 minutes to get my car. The original valet held my keys and then passed them off to someone else. Evidentally he didn't think musicians tip! The night after the show I checked out and it took another 20 minutes to get my car. Three other parties that came after me had their cars brought before mine. The room was nothing to write home about and the service was terrible!

We read the mixed reviews about the hotel before booking our stay. Unfortunately, the
negative reviews were correct. We stayed in a Deluxe room with two queen beds. The
air conditioner was incredibly noisy. When we spoke to the front desk about the noise,
they replied, “sir, we’re an older hotel”. They did not offer Maintenance and/or a different
room. The beds were comfortable, however they are made with only a bottom sheet
and duvet. When we requested a top sheet, the housekeeper brought up two sheets
and handed them to us (never offering to put on the bed). We ate at one of their
restaurants. The food was very good but the service was very poor. After we were
seated, a server did not come to the table for over 15 minutes. When he finally arrived,
I mentioned our unhappiness of the wait, and he replied “don’t make an issue about the
wait with him, he just got on shift”. Yet, he delivered the drink order and took the food
order for the table next to us (who were seated after us). I frequently stay in the
Hollywood area and know that the Roosevelt was closed for some time while they
renovated. They should have spent more money on guest room renovations, and need
to invest time/money in customer service training. If not, they may be forced to close
again.
