“Tucked Away Amid the Hollywood Hubbub”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 6, 2013 via mobile

Central location behind The Dolby Theater and half a block away from the Metro station. Easy access from LAX. We enjoyed staying right in Hollywood and doing all the kitschy tourist things. Pool is heated. Our suite was a former 1 BR apartment w/ king beds. Continental breakfast just so-so but enough to get your day started. Only drawback as others have pointed out is the noise. We had loud talking squealing girls next door at 3 am - called the office and they addressed it immediately. The apartment building next door had some loud tenants talking outside that woke us up a few times since we had the windows open - too bad because the hotel is in an otherwise quiet spot.

If you're a first time visitor to LA and you want to do the Chinese Theatre, footprints, Hollywood Boulevard thing, you simply couldn't get a better location than here. All those are literally round the corner. The Hollywood Bowl is also walkable and so it makes a brilliant base if you're attending a concert. There are other more expensive hotels on the road to the Bowl, but this was just great. I think it was a 20 minute walk there - but perfectly doable. Staff were good - breakfast wasn't great - but the price was good and the location simply unbeatable.

The location is very centrally located and right behind the Lowe's Convention Center/Hotel in Hollywood. The Orchid itself is very unattractive from the outside, but the convenience and security features compensate. Unfortunately, there is scant soundproofing. A family with small children checked into the room above us well after we were in bed and made a terrible racket, with children using the bed as a trampoline and jumping onto the floor. I called the manager at 1:30, and he called the room, to no avail. At 2 AM, I called again, and the manager said he would go up to the room. By 2:30, it was finally quiet, and I could get some sleep, but very little, since we had to leave for a conference at 7:30 AM. (This was another problem, as the breakfast room didn't open until 7:30, so we grabbed some food and ran.) The breakfast offerings were skimpy, and you won't find any protein. The addition of hard-boiled eggs would be most welcome. The staff was very helpful and courteous, and we did get a discount on checkout and apologies for the noise above our room, even though it was not the fault of the management. (We did suggest that families be put on the first floor in the future, as there is nothing to absorb noise in the walls or floors. We did find out that the family that checked in late at night flew in from Asia, which is why the children were so rambunctious that late in the night.)

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the top floor if you want any peace and quiet.

My sisters, sister-in-law and I stayed here for 5 days in mid March. We arrived before lunch and check in wasn't until 3 but Marlow called up and had our room cleaned right away while she told us to go upstairs and have a coffee or tea and relax while we waited. The room which was very spacious included a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave and dishes. It was very clean and neat. The staff are so friendly and helpful. Patricia made us feel like we were family. She was always there helping out at the free continental breakfast. The location is great. Next door is a shopping mall and in front of the mall is Hollywood Boulevard. The hotel is on a dead end street but we felt safe while we were there and it was very quiet. Thank you so much to all the staff.

Room Tip: We stayed on the top floor in a room at the end of the hall. It was very quiet and spacious.

The location is really great, but the hotel is pretty old including the room decor, and the location on a dead end street with an industrial look is a drawback. However, the prices are very good and as long as you don't expect to see a modern Hilton you won't be disappointed. The rooms are very large which is also a plus.

Firstly, if you want to stay somewhere close to the centre of the Hollywood throng, this is the place to stay. A leisurely 3-4 minute stroll will have you at the Chinese Theatre surrounded by the buzz. The hotel is very reasonably priced and even provides a complimentary breakfast. The suites are spacious but a little tired. Our kitchen/dining room had a rather unpleasant odour. Other reviewers have commented on the paper thin walls - I must agree with these comments - people in adjoining rooms could be heard clearly even though they weren't being abnormally loud. As well as being close to Hollywood Blvd, the subway is only a 2 min walk and just one stop up the red-line will have you at Universal City and a free shuttle to Universal Studios. One tip with Universal Studios - If you're only there for 1 day, spend the extra and get the front of line pass. We comfortably did every ride and show in the one day which wouldn't be possible without the pass. The hotel staff were all very friendly and helpful - especially the lady who looks after the breakfast - Thank you Patricia.

This is the first time we stayed in this hotel. We love the great location. So close to almost everything. Our suite was so comfortable it had the feeling of home. The staff were so great, accomodating and always helpful. Special thanks to Marlow of the front desk and Patricia who was always cheerful and almost motherly. We will surely come and stay with them again when in Hollywood. Highly recommended especially for those travelling with the whole family.
