“it's not about the food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 25, 2012

I know this place for more than 20 years now, went through changes in decor, service, chefs, etc., the quality of food was sometimes better sometimes not, but it was always LA POUBELLE, with a great Patron and a funky crowd of people showing up, I experienced some of the best Coq au Vin ever and some very average food, but I always like going there and it's always fun, don't be scared because some of the reviews ... GO ... and if you don't like it, there are plenty of alternatives next door, LA POUBELLE is French ... like it or not

“go someplace else”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed November 8, 2009

The food is passable -- I had the coq au vin -- but no more than that. The service was unfriendly and just a little too groovy for words. There are a lot of better places within a ten minute walk.

“Phenomenal food and atmosphere at La Poubelle”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 8, 2009

A return trip to LA prompted yet another gathering at La Poubelle. All the friends who joined us there before wanted to come back again and new visitors also LOVED the Fine, French cuisine as much as we did.
The cheese plate is phenomenal, the escargot extremely good, though TOO hot ( a warning would have been helpful, as I scalded the roof of my mouth). The sirloin burger was unbelievably delicious.
For dessert, everyone loved the Molten Chocolate cake. Though, again, the servers could have told us to expect a 20 minute wait on the cake.
We didn't ever know who our servers were... they all came over once or twice and took a few people's order at a time... producing slow and weird service.
We would endure the service again as the food is so good. Expensive ( $80 for my husband and I with no drinks and splitting one burger and dessert, though we shared 3 appetizers).
We would recommend if you are in the mood to sit and wait for a long time with a group of friends, which is also pretty French in style.

“Great food!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 11, 2008

Terrific food .. we had coq au vin, mussels mouliniere, grilled Greek salad, penne arribiata .. all wonderful! And generous portions, reasonably priced entrees. That's the good part .. and it is good indeed. Problems are the $30 per person minimum to sit at a table to dine, which means you have to load up on appetizers, salads, desserts, and drinks to make the quota, and combined with the big portions of the entrees, makes for a stuffed meal. Be warned that they charge for bread .. $4 for a small sliced baguette .. but the bread is delicious, and worth it! The music is deafening, you literally cannot hear the person sitting next to you, and you and the server must shriek at each other to be heard. I don't like sitting out on a "patio" that is basically on the sidewalk of a busy street, but it's a better bet than inside, where you are seriously in danger of ear damage. Why they do any of this is beyond me .. turn down the music for heaven's sake .. it almost seems designed to discourage patrons, but I'll go back .. for the food!!!
