We went to Toi last night at around 8pm. This is our first dining experience in LA and i can say we were not impressed!
We chose Toi as it was so widely liked on trip advisor. Ok so the atmosphere was great well decorated with old movie posters and rock posters, i especially liked the signed Pulp Fiction poster, signed by Quentin himself.
Unfortunately thats where the good bits ended. Don't get me wrong the portions were huge, and we over ordered as we didn't know! However the flavours just were not there. I had Satay Chicken for start, got six skewers with peanut dressing and some other deressing i didnt try. They chicken was tastless and the peanut sauce was just like oily peanut butter, no spices what so ever. For Main i had the Red Curry, I have this thing about red curry and try and have the same dish in each Thai restaurant so that i can give a well rounded review with plenty of eating experience. My I say that the curry was bland at best, huge bowl yes, but id rather have had a small portion with lots of flavour. It seemed to be loaded with basil and that was about it. No tangy undertones from lemon grass that just should be present in a thai curry, no aromatic spicy flavour and most of all no Coconut milk flavour to speak off. tasted like it had been made with water!
We had a side of steamed rice, again huge but a little over cooked which made it all stick together.
My wife had the Veggie pad thai noodles, which she though mediocre at best, again could have fed 3 people but the flavours were just not there!
The service that also disappointing as it felt like we were being rushed, and food was dropped on to the table! NO TIP FOR YOU!
To sum up, we wont be returning, which is a shame as im a great fan of Thai, but this just did not cut the mustard.
