“Go for the view and sit outside! Food okay............”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 24, 2012

The only reason to go to this restaurant is to sit outside, for lunch or dinner, or brunch on weekends, and watch the open channel, the boats going by - especially lit up at night - the sun setting on the open water, the brown pelicans fishing, the seals playing in the water..............feeling breezes under umbrella tables.................NOT for the food. As others have said, the food is okay. Nothing special, but adequate. I especially like the Early Bird Special served during the week before 6:00 p.m. Choice of prime rib, fettuccini, chicken, or fish with soup (chouder - good!), or salad (very good for a house salad), good bread with a basil/butter spread, and dessert - all for $20. Not bad! Honestly, this is my favorite place. We have been coming here (we live in the area) for more than 30 years. There is nothing like a leisurely lunch or dinner, watching the sun on the water. It actually is magical on a summer evening, gazing at the party boats lazing by, fully alight - the whole scene tells you again (if you needed reminding) how wonderful it is to live in (or visit!) Southern Calif.

Another thing I like about it is the waiters have been here forever. Very solicitous - they aim to please, and are very professional.

They have a loyalty club where you earn points when you dine, and I received a FREE entree this month as it ws my birthday month.........which I promptly took advantage of! I have been here countless times for graduation and birthday celebrations, wedding receptions, and entertaining, and the setting never disappoints.

So don't expect gourmet cooking - but plan to have a most wonderful outdoor dining experience that will remind you how good it is to be alive!

“Great view if you sit outside, poor food.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 19, 2012

A group of 6 of us ate here for Sunday brunch. Valet parking was full. We arrived for our 1:30 reservation about 10 minutes early and were seated on time. We were seated right outside the bathroom close to the bar. Our table was a foldable picnic table covered with a table cloth and the chairs were conference type chairs (very uncomfortable). The pasta station was average, as was the omelette station. The carving station had one piece of roast left, and once that was finished they shut down the station (by 2pm). The crab legs were very skinning looking. The shrimp was shell on and not very big. Their sushi was bland. The salad bar barely had any trimmings. The hot food items did not look appetizing at all, runny eggs, plastic bacon, overcooked vegetables. On a positive note, the chocolate fountain was a nice option for dessert, and the waiter was nice and kept filling our champagne glasses, perhaps to make the food go down easierly? It seems for the price, one can find many other tastier options. Go elsewhere.

“Saturday champagne brunch”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 4, 2012

The setting and view on Marina del Rey's boardwalk would be the main reason to patronize this restaurant. Their Saturday champagne brunch (no a la carte available) was average, not remarkable. It was very busy with three separate private parties, but service was attentive and the buffets always filled.
This location is hard to beat - we had out of town guests who were completely taken by the view, the gorgeous weather, and kept saying how lucky we are to be Californians!

“"good dinner on a sunny day"”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 19, 2012

We had out-of-town guests staying in the Marina Del Rey area and we actually reserved a table at another restaurant in "Fisherman's Village." When we got to the other restaurant, a very loud band was playing right near the outdoor patio. We wanted to dine outdoors since it was a gorgeous sunny late afternoon, so we walked along the waterfront to see what we could find. Shanghai Red had an inviting patio, with a view of the sailboats sailing to and from the marina, the menu looked good, if pricey, so we ended up there. Everyone was happy with the experience. The fish and seafood dishes were all good, as was the salad I ordered. The food wasn't exactly "gourmet" quality, but the portions were generous and everything was pretty good. The bread and pesto dip were outstanding. The service was excellent. I'd go back.
