“Great Greek Food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 4, 2013

My favorite greek restaurant. The restaurant has recently had a redo and was closed for two months. It is in an old house behind the shops on Third. It is hard to find. You go down a small pathway where you find the gates to the restaurant. There is an open courtyard as well as indoor seating. My favorite dish is the Tigani Chicken. My daughter's is the Gyros Platter. The Kria Pikilla For Two could feed four. The restaurant is on the expensive side but worth it. Lunch time is not busy but dinnertime can be.

“Nice atmosphere”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 25, 2013

We ate at the Sofi location at Woodman and Oxnard in Van Nuys. We were staying in the area and were hungry and looking for a place. When we saw the outside, we expected a family restaurant and were pleasantly surprised to find it was Greek food with tablecloths and nice décor. It has only been open a short time but they are associated with a restaurant of the same name downtown. We are by no means experts on Greek food, so I can't speak to the authenticity of the food, but it tasted good. My friend said the lamb chops were the best she had ever eaten. I ordered moussaka but the waiter came back and said they were out of it. Instead, he suggested the pastitisio special (which I would have ordered anyway if I had known they had it). It was very good. The service was good, the waiter was friendly but not overbearing, and I liked the décor. Even the bathroom's décor showed that attention had been given to it. However, we were there at around 7 p.m. on a week night, and there was very little business. There seemed to be a couple of regulars, and a couple of other diners besides ourselves. Before we left, someone (not our waiter) brought us some free bagels (apparently left from breakfast, but that was ok). They are open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. My only real complaint is that when we drove up, a valet rushed to take our car (and charge us $3) even though there were numerous free parking places in the lot, and we could have parked it ourselves in the exact same spot where he parked us.

We sat on the patio and that was our first mistake as the tables were dirty. The chairs were filthy and there was bird waste caked on the table and the surroundings. Overall, the food was poorly prepared and foreign material, not food, were found in our meal. The plates and silverware were not completely clean either. A kitchen assistant was observed leaving the bathroom stall after being inside for quite some time, and she failed to wash her hands. In addition, the restaurant is very highly priced and the cost does not meet the value.

“Nice setting and staff. Terrible food.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 17, 2012

We used to come here all the time, years ago. We were excited to come back with a Bloomspot deal. Our order: saganaki - very greasy and salty, taramosalata - very salty, pastitio - dry, youvetsi - we both wanted this, but thankfully, one of us didn't order it. Usually with a braised lamb shank, you only need a fork, since the meat falls off the bone. I had to use a knife, and even then couldn't completely cut into the rubbery meat. I don't know how this can happen, but the dish definitely did not look freshly made. I wonder how long it sat in the freezer. We agreed that the best thing served to us was the pita bread, which is not saying much. The staff is friendly thus 2 stars instead of 1. The setting is pretty, especially if you like to dine outdoors. If not for the constant traffic noises, you could almost pretend you're in Santorini. We wanted so much to like this place, sadly, we were completely disappointed.

“What were we thinking?”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed May 21, 2012

A Groupon offer reminded us of this place, which we had not visited for a long time. The courtyard was lovely, the restaurant quaint, the food was simply awful, overcooked, mushy vegetables, sea basss that was actually tough, it had been cooked for so long, stale dolmas.

Service was strange. Our waitress must have sensed our disappointment, and the more anxious she became, the more familiar - soon she was patting our arms and shoulders and asking if we wanted to try something else.

To add insult to injury, had we not been using a coupon, this disaster of a meal would have cost over $90 for two people. No matter how long they remain open, we won't be back.
