With my partner I have just returned from an eleven night stay at the Hollywood Hills Hotel, beginning on 16th September 2008 and can say with all sincerity both of us were more than happy with all aspects of the hotel and its service.
Believe me, I am the type of person who tells of a situation exactly as it is and if I wasn't happy about an issue would speak out but in the case of the Hollywood Hills I had nothing at all to be unhappy over.
Check-in for the Hollywood Hills is at the Magic Castle Hotel and from the second we arrived to the second we left the front desk staff couldn't do enough to assist us and made us feel completely welcome. The Hollywood Hills is located (obviously) on a hill behind the Magic Castle. The distance to the Hollywood Hills is perfectly walkable and although a little steep is pleasant, taking around only 10-15 mins at a steady pace. We walked most days, without any problems and found the walk great for excercise, but for anyone unwilling or unable to make the walk the Magic Castle staff are always more than happy to drive guests the distance - at any time of day or night. A drive can be requested to or from the hotel just by asking at the foyer or picking up the phone in your room.
As for the hotel itself, let me firstly point out the amazing views of LA it has to offer. We took a studio city room (room 404) and it had the most fantastic, extensive view over the city, right to downtown. It also had a gorgeous view of the Hollywood Hills (see my pics). Sitting on the balcony watching the sun rise and fall over LA is something I will always remember.
The room itself was a decent size, clean, tidy and perfectly acceptable. There was a good size private bathroom, with the bath, sink area and toilet kept in pristine condition. The shower was powerful, a good tonic after a long day.
**Please note - the TV worked fine and had more than enough channels for someone taking a vacation**
The bed was the most comfortable of any I have ever stayed in at any hotel. It was huge! No chance of my partner kicking me in his sleep - he wouldn't make contact!
The kitchen area was also clean and well stocked with cooker, fridge, microwave, grill, pots, pans and even washing up liquid.
The location of the hotel is very quiet, away from the citys' noise but is ideally located for Hollywood Boulevard. The walk from the Hollywood Hills to street level is much shorter and attractions such as Graumann's Chinese Theater and the Hollywood and Highlands shopping mall are minutes away. The hotel is also ideal for travelling elsewhere in LA. Bus services run from Hollywood Boulevard to pretty much everywhere and the fare is just $5 for an all day pass. Also, the Metro tube is at the side of the Hollywood and Highlands Mall, running directly to Universal Studios and so forth.
Each morning, a complimentary breakfast is provided at the Magic Castle between 7 and 10am, consisting of fresh pastries, cereals, yoghurts, bread, juice and teas/coffees - all are delicious.
During our stay we were also given bottles of water, chocolate and other goodies, free of charge, given with a smile! The staff are so genuinely friendly and helpful. Any queries are dealt with instantly, they even printed off directions and bus times to local attractions for us as well as checking in on line for our flights home and printing our boarding passes.
The hotel also has a laundry room open until late, where wash powder can be purchased for a small price.
The Magic Castle offers use of its' pool and sun loungers at any time and staying at either hotel gives access to the Magicians' club just next door.
At the side of the Hollywood Hills is the Yamashiro restaurant. From the restaurant there are the most spectacular panoramic views of the city, well worth walking the two minutes to photograph.
All in all I do not have a bad word to say about this hotel. If you are looking for great value ($159 per night for a studio city room) a stunning view, comfortable, clean accomodation, friendly service and close proximity to Hollywood Boulevard, this hotel has it all.
If you expect pure J Lo style luxury and 100% modern and expensive fixtures and fittings or are upset at the thought of a daily walk up and down a moderately steep hill you may need to look elsewhere. For everyone who does book, you should not be disappointed.
