“"Hollywood Steal"”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2012

Now, this hotel is situtated right next to Yamashiro - (Mountain Castle) a sushi restuarant with a breathtaking view of Los Angeles. The property has been part of Hollywood History for almost 100 years. The property consists of lower hotel (Magic Castle , up the hill is Hollywood Hills Hotel then turn to the peak is Yamashiro - all walking distance)

The Hollywood Hlls Hotel is adjacent to The Magc Castle Club where check in, unlimited snacks and complimentary breakfast are available. The hotel is not modern or chic. It doesn't have any flat screen televisions or Ipod docks. However it's pool is next to Yamashiro garden and has a great view of Hollywood since the whole property is situated up in the hills.

It's walking distance to Hollywood Boulevard and Highland. SO the location is a Gem. I had a good experience with my stay. We tried the 1 bedroom suite and the kitchen and restroom were clean stocked with towels and all. It was also quiet and a nice walk down the hill to Hollywood Blvd. (A free shuttle is also available to and from Magic Castle entrance) Parking is $11 a night.

I'll definitely come back- however if you're looking for a luxurious hotel with automatic draperies this isn't it... The Hollywood Hills Hotel is more rustic, simple and tranquil.

After reading the reviews, I had decent expectations of this hotel.

Night 1. First night (room 201 or 211) - actually downgraded (and lied to as they said it was the room we booked). We had booked a King suite with City view (and I have the documentation to prove it) but instead received a twin double with a hill view. The room was extremely run down and the sheets were covered in blood stains and upon complaining we were given new sheets which we had to change ourselves. After a bit of hounding the night manager admitted we'd been given the wrong room. He said our real room wasn't available but promised to move us to the correct room the next day, saying we'd get full compensation for the lost night.

Night 2 & 3 Upon return from a day out (which was blighted by the worry about the room move) we were told they'd successfully moved us. We got into the room (I think 511 or 504), and this time it was a king bed but not a suite. I rang the manager who said the the room type we actually booked was in no fit state to be occupied, and that actually it was very difficult to correctly describe the rooms they had available on the websites they sold through. They said they'd decided that giving us a King bed and a city view should be enough.
It was a filthy, battered room, with a fridge that looked like it had been chewed and spat out by King Kong, and a bathroom which provided a stable home for a lively parade of ants. This room was also located very near to a Japanese restaurant which seemed to have some nice outdoor space. Unfortunately that meant that we had loud music and other general noise playing into the room until around 11.30pm. It was the last but one evening of our holiday and too late to move. The manager confirmed the room was cheaper than than the one I'd originally booked and we eventually agreed suitable compensation was a 25% discount on my original payment for nights 2&3 (on top on a full reimbursement for the first night).

Despite our agreement the refund I've received so far was about 1/4 of what was promised. The 1 star is because I can't give lower, and covers the free snacks and swimming pool.

Room Tip: Try choosing a room in another hotel.

I had read the reviews, which had positive things to say, but all pointed out that the rooms weren't new or overly clean. So we thought we knew what we were getting ourselves into. But when we walked down the dark, dank hallway on the 2nd floor and opened the door we were shocked at how dirty and rundown the room truly was. The mysterious streaks on the wall as soon as you entered the room weren't as alarming as the diry carpet in the living room area. It was obvious that it hadn't been vacuumed in quite a while as it looked dirty & stained and there was still a couple of dead bugs in the open. We went to check the bed for signs of bugs (something we always do when we stay in hotels) and found some mystery stains that appeared to be blood on the bed skirt. At this point i didn't even want to go near the bed. Back to the living room we went, that's where we saw another very large mystery stain down the drapes and something splattered & stained on the desk lamp. We were tired from being up early and traveling but there was no way we were going to sit down on the old, ripped up, dirty couch in the living room. We went to the balcony to discuss what we should do and noticed that the balcony foundation is cracking and looks to be seperating from the building At this point we called the front desk.

We asked if it was possible to change rooms and detailed the dirtyness of the room and while the staff was nice they also said the quality of the room is reflected in the price. They had the cleaning staff show us another room which was amazing, this one was bright and cleaner. Our room didn't even have a window in the bedroom. We called back to the front desk and said we would move to that room, but were then informed that we weren't supposed to see that room because it's not available. Once again the cleaning staff had to come back to our dirty room and take us to see another room. Up to the 5th floor and to a room that was smaller, but nicer and bright. It kind of felt like a cabin. By no means was this room super clean or perfect, but it was way better than the other rooms. Plus when you step out of the room you don't have to walk down the dark halls that the other rooms lead to.

The dirtyness isn't just due to lack of cleaning, it's also due to not cleaning properly. You can see where they use cleaning products on walls but they don't wipe it down completly. So you end up with a wall that's half dirty and then streaked with green cleaning product.

After all that negative talk let me mention a couple of good things about Hollywood Hills Hotel:
-- Staff are super friendly, and not in a false way. Very helpful and pleasent to deal with.
-- Free snacks. Every night before going up to our room we'd stop at the front desk and give them a list of sodas, candy and snacks that we wanted. No matter how much we asked for they never gave us attitude or said no. Why can't every hotel offer this?!
-- Free shuttle up to the property. Walking down the hill for breakfast every morning was easy. After wandering Hollywood for 12 hours the thought of the long walk up hill was not something we looked forward to. But if you stop at the front desk they'll have someone drive you up.
-- Great location!! Lots of things to see & do within a short walking distance, and close to public transit to get you around.
-- The view from our room on the 5th floor was breathtaking, day & night.

If the owners were to replace some furniture, clean the carpets & walls, and make sure their cleaning staff was properly trained, the Hollywood Hills Hotel could be an amazing place to stay.

Room Tip: Ask for room 504. Not only is it clean and have a great view, but it's close to the pool.

This hotel was a great find for those who don't want to spend more than $150 per night on a room. The location is perfect, 5 min walk to the walk of fame etc. Free WIFI in the hotel lobby which is good as you don't need to be on your phone all the time when you are on holidays. The hotel is situated on a hill so you have a great view! The pool was so warm and a perfect treat after a long day of sightseeing. The have a free snack bar which is SOO awesome, any chocolate, softdrinks (soda) or chips you want. Free continental breakfast, perfect start to the day. Staff are really friendly, have great advice and really look after you. I have been told that the parking rate of $11 a day is quite cheap - we were very happy with it. The rooms are a bit tired, but if you want nice rooms then you will need to pay more a night I suppose. Loved our stay there and would definately recommend to friends.

We were fairly please with this hotel. It used to be apartments that have been renovated. I think they are still in the process of renovating because it was a mix of new features and old worn features. Overall it is fairly clean, I noticed a little dirt/dust behind the bathroom door and the carpet had some stains, but everything else was ok. The beds were clean. The room is really like an apartment so this would be good if you were staying for a while. The best part of this place is the pool and the view (if you are in a city-side, not hillside room). In person, the pool really does look like the photos.
If you plan to visit the walk of starts and Chinese theatre this is a short walk from the hotel. This touristy area of Hollywood is pretty sketchy. It was nice to return to the peaceful Hollywood Hills after our insane walk down Hollywood Blvd.
If you have mobility issues, this may not be the hotel for you. There is not an elevator and depending on which floor you are on, you may need to walk up a flight or two of stairs with your luggage. The hotel is on a steep hill, so it is about a 5 - 10 minute walk down to breakfast at the main hotel (Magic Castle). However, they do offer a free shuttle.
You can use the amentities at the Magic Castle hotel (they give out snacks), but the pool at the Hollywood Hils is much nicer. The staff is super friendly and helpful. They gave us some good restaurant recommendations.
Breakfast at the Magic Castle was pretty tasty. It was your regular continental breakfast items - cereal, muffins, yogurt, fruit. It was presented beautifully (it looked like Martha Stewart set it out).
Yes we received a surprise parking fee at the Hollywood hotels. I do not remember the exact amount, but it was between $10 and $15 for the night.
To summarize, this place could be a little cleaner, but the staff, the pool, and the view are awesome.

Great Hollywood location, walk to Chinese Theater and attractions. Sister property of Magic Castle. Up a big hill giving you a great view of LA. Thursday nights they have a farmers market at the restaurant above hotel which is fabulous, complete with music. Pool at hotel has great view and is quiet and relaxing after a day of sightseeing. Free snacks and breakfast in hotel lobby. Rooms are very large with nice balconies. Most have kitchenettes. Shower pressure is great! Linens great. Furnishings and cabinets in kitchen and bathroom vanities are old and nicked a bit. Bathroom counters are nice granite. Carpet and flooring not the best, but really not a problem at all. If you want luxury 4 Seasons/ Ritz Carlton decor than this is not the place for you. The size of the rooms and the location and friendliness and helpfulness of the staff more than make up for these shortcomings. We stayed 4 days and at first I was not sure of the old decor, but I enjoyed my surroundings more and more each day. The rooms are very large compared to a regular hotel room! There is an 11.00 parking fee, but the room is very reasonable /cheap at around 140.00 a night for this location. Thanks Hollywood Hills for a wonderful stay!

Room Tip: Thursday night Farmer's market is a must from 5-9pm.

Hotel is in a great location, however it is also in dire need of an upgrade. The chairs were filthy (I was not game enough to sit on them) and the bathroom had an ant problem. Shower is a trickling tap and not the best shower to enjoy after a 20 hour flight. There are some apartments which seem to be different (newer windows), so perhaps we were unlucky and got the worst of the lot. Checkin was also at 12pm, however our card was deactivated at 11am, which is their standard procedure - very inconvenient having to go down and have this reactivated.
