“Hostel, not hotel.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed June 16, 2012

The only pluses were friendly front of house staff and location.
The place is clearly not a hotel, more a motel with a paint job. WiFi was appalling! I would have done better with dial up.

Worst part altogether was that the place, without asking me, "authorised" 50 dollars from my account for every night of stay, which has yet to come back to my account, and being Friday night I will now be without it until my holiday is over. Major inconvenience, and this alone dropped it a star on my rating. I came from the Encore in Las Vegas the night before and they didn't try pull anything like this.

The cleaning staff ignored the "Do not Disturb" sign on my door the first 2 days so I gave up hanging it.

I marked value as average since I used a groupon voucher and I accept accommodation in a good area of L.A. for a reasonable price is hard to come by. Walls are also paper thin, can hear everything.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your feedback. We are delighted to hear our staff was friendly, and you enjoyed the Melrose Avenue location. We apologize for your inconveniences, and take your responses seriously. In light of this, we would like to address them:

1. All hotels in the US take authorization hold on credit upon check in (this must be via cash or credit card). This is required to guarantee the property for use of any incidental charges incurred during your stay – such as minibar, room service, etc. In fact, most hotels actually take $100-$150 per night, however, Palihotel only takes $50. We highly recommend against use of debit cards, as the hold can last 5-7 days depending upon your bank. We apologize if this was not made more clear to you upon arrival & we will ensure our staff are well trained to advise guests of the policy going forward.

2. We use the very best, state-of-the-art wireless internet available complimentary throughout the hotel and in all rooms, each with their own specific router connection. We encourage guests to contact our front desk immediately if they are not familiar with this system, and we will personally set up any laptops or phones to ensure 100% efficiency at all times.

3. We will speak to our housekeeping staff to ensure they respect the request for privacy, and apologize they interrupted you to clean.

We would be delighted to call your bank for you directly to request the release of our authorization hold and also speak to you if there is anything else we might do to assist. Please feel free to call Fernando Canale, Hotel General Manager, directly at 323 272 4588 or via email to fernando@pali-group.com for prompt attention.

Once again, please accept our apology for your inconvenience. We hope to have another opportunity to welcome you back, so we can prove you will have a wonderful stay.

Warm regards,

Palihotel Management

Overall, this place was very nice indeed. The design is really appealing, and throughout the property it's up to date and well done - and smells nice. There is no breakfast as such, but a little on-property café is open in the morning. Currently no dinner service. The shower and bed were the best of our whole stay, and I quite enjoyed the hooks and hangers instead of having a traditional wardrobe. I'd also recommend the massage service. David on reception was very helpful, one night we ordered food for delivery and he went out of his way to give us some plates and cutlery. The downsides were a lack of space for toiletries in the bathroom, no phone in the room, no free parking (at least it was safe), comically short lead on the hairdryer, and no alarm clock.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your feedback. We are delighted to hear you enjoyed your stay at Palihotel.

As we have only been open for four months, we are still working on ironing out the small kinks in the hotel to make your time with us more enjoyable. We sincerely appreciate your feedback and are currently working on adding a shelf in the bathrooms in addition to the cabinet that is below the sink. The hairdryer actually has a retractable cord which is 4 feet long. We don't provide phones in the rooms as most guests have smart phones and front desk is available 24/7 on text, email and phone. For those guests that need access to phones to contact our staff or to make local calls, we have a selection of cell phones that are available to loan for guests free of charge.

We would love to welcome you back on another visit to Los Angeles. Please feel free to book us directly & we will make certain we exceed your expectations.

Warm regards,
Palihotel Management

Pros: Great location. Very comfortable bed. Great shower and water pressure. Very clean. Nice coffee bar in the lobby. Free Wi-Fi.

Cons: Corner queen room with terrace is a must. We originally were given a queen room with no terrace and I would have left the hotel had they not moved us. Dark rooms, needs a lot more lighting. No AC control in the room, so had to sleep with the terrace door open. No bathroom counter space. No closet or luggage rack. They do give you a few hangers to hang up on the wall. No extra furniture (really could use a dresser with drawers, some type of nice sitting chair or sofa). Really needs a room phone to be able to call down to the front desk.

I would not stay here again. It wasn't a horrible experience, but we were only in the room at night to sleep. It served the purpose, but if you are going to be in the room very much I would not recommend staying here. Also, for the younger crowd.

Room Tip: Corner Queen Room with Terrace is the only way to go!

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your positive feedback about our property! We appreciate you taking the time to post your response on Trip Advisor & we are so thrilled you enjoyed the comfy bed & rain shower.

The Corner Queens with Terrace are available online – they are our very best accommodations!

While we absolutely take all your feedback into consideration as we grow, please note our rooms are designed to offer all you need and nothing you don't; and the aesthetic is always well received by our target demographic.

Also, our front desk is staffed 24/7 should there be anything they can do to make all guests most comfortable while at Palihotel Melrose. They are happy to offer friendly assistance, and maybe reached via phone at 323 272 4588 or email.

We hope to have another opportunity to welcome you again.

Warm regards,

3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 22, 2012

We just completed our three night stay at the Palihotel, which we purchased through Groupon/Expedia, and left with very mixed feelings about our experience.

On the one hand, the location was fantastic and the hotel itself has a really interesting and eclectic style which we liked. Also, we were pleased to see that the hotel took some of the previous reviewers feedback and made some changes for the better - for example, there were plenty of lights in the room so it was no longer a dark cavern.

On the other hand, the customer service left a lot to be desired. To start, we knew that we would not be able to check in until after 1 AM so we phoned ahead to let the hotel know so that they would not change/cancel our booking. Unfortunately, we called a minimum of 5 times between 9 and 10 PM and never got to speak with an actual person. Nevertheless, we got to the hotel around 1 AM and found the doors to be locked. We rang the door bell without success, and followed-up with yet another call to the main number. It wasn't until about 5 to 10 minutes later that the night attendee just happened to walk by and let us in the hotel. Once we got in to the hotel, we were able to easily pick up our room keys and went to our room only to find that we had two double beds instead of the queen, which we reserved and got confirmation from the hotel - I was traveling with my wife and two double beds are not an option! When I complained, the front desk person stated that our room was the only one remaining and advised that I check the next morning and that they should be able to accommodate our original reservation for a queen bed. He offered to push the beds together but the beds and bed frames did not allow for us to push them together as there was a gap of a few inches. So for three nights, my wife and I ended up having to sleep in separate beds - ala 1950's America. Unfortunately, when I checked the next day (Sat. 19 May) I was told that the Groupon deal was for "run of house" and that they were not going to be able to accommodate our request for a queen bed. The front desk attendee told me that it was in the fine print and that since we are getting such a good deal through Groupon that they couldn't do anything further. I double-checked the Groupon fine prints and there is no mention of a "run of house" policy. Bottom line, it seemed like we were being looked at as the "cheap" guest and that they were going to treat us as such.

One last thing, as previously mentioned the A/C control is not individual to the room but rather for the entire floor or wing? I had to ask each night for the A/C to be turned off as the hall way thermometer ready 68 degrees - freezing in the room. In fairness, the attendees promptly changed the temp. setting so that it comfortable in the room.

If not for the bed situation, I would have no issues giving Palihotel a 4 star instead of the 3 I assigned it.

Room Tip: Stay further away from the elevator as its old and seems to be loud.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your feedback. We are delighted to hear you've recognized our changes, and appreciate you sharing your positive response on Trip Advisor!

We apologize for the inconvenience upon your arrival. Please rest assured we will reconnect with our staff to ensure prompt response to phone calls. We understand Groupon customers maybe calling the wrong number because there is no direct dial listed on the voucher; the direct dial to guest services is: 323 272 4588.

We promise to provide equal VIP treatment to all guests regardless of how they've made their reservation. While we do our very best to meet bed type requests, we can only guarantee them if they are selected at the time of booking.

Groupon vouchers are indeed reserved for run of house. We apologize for any confusion this may have caused & we encourage you to call Groupon directly to elaborate on their product terms.

We would love to welcome you back on another visit to Los Angeles. Please feel free to book us directly & we will make certain we exceed your expectations.

Warm regards,
Palihouse Management

The Pali hotel on Melrose was an absolute treat. Very funky, great design, cool interior. Beds were great, rainforest shower and fun interiors. Staff is amazing and the little cafe is lovely - amazing lattes. No phones in room but there is wifi
This is a fantastic location - close so shopping, Schindler house, wicked restaurants and great vibe.
If you are looking for a "Marriott" type experience, this is not for you. If you want all of the above then this is definitely for you. For business travel, may not be ideal but for vacation, it was great.
Would absolutely come back again. Staff attentive and helped in any way needed.

Very very unfriendly staff - way less than a low budget motel - the dodgers also wanted me to pay 20$ per day the parking, despite in the room and in booking.com (where I booked the room) was clearly written 15$!!
Dark rooms, no phone, no minibar, no A/C controller (you have to freeze all night long). I have been there for 3 nights unfortunately and it has been my only bad experience in all California.
Stay away from this place!

Firstly we would like to let you know that been in touch with booking.com to remind them to update our parking prices on their site and we do apologize that you received incorrect information. If this was addressed with management we could have adjusted this for you on-site.

We do understand that Palihotel is not the right fit for every traveler, however we appreciate you giving us your feedback.

So we actually came to this hotel by mistake, we had a 12 hours to spent in LA and we needed a room in good price, and i am ashamed to say, but because we had such good time, we decided to give it another day and do some sight seeing.

this ,relatively new, boutique hotel which feels like the L.A small version of NYC Dream DownTown created a unique combination between good price and good service and NYC stile atmosphere which makes it very attractive to both business men and couples.
