I had a day to kill at the end of a recent business trip to LA, so I elected to stay at the Renaissance Hollywood Hotel. First word of warning--try to arrive outside of rush hour, as traffic on North Highland Avenue approaching the hotel moved VERY slowly at 5:30 p.m. Upon arrival, I handed my car over to the valet ($22 a day with in & out privileges) and was immediately greeted by the front desk clerk. She quickly checked me in to my room on the club floor, but it was only after I walked away that I realized that she did not give me any information on the club floor lounge (open 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.). The room had a nice view of the LA smog--downtown was barely visible, although the Hollywood sign could be seen off to the side. The room itself was clean and decorated in a style that is intended to be modern and hip. To me, however, it came across as austere and cold (although the room does include a fish in a small bowl so as to ensure that you have a friend away from home). The room and bathroom also seemed a tad smaller than typical, although they were certainly big enough, and the all-important bed was comfortable. Room service was fine, although the hallways were lined with dirty trays--one stayed outside my room the whole time I was there. As for the hotel's location, it can't be beat--the Kodak Center is just steps away, and virtually all of the sites of interest along Hollywood Blvd. are within a convenient walk. While Hollywood is not the nicest part of LA, the Renaissance is definitely the place to stay if you want to be close to the Hollywood attractions.
