I booked this hotel for a family vacation during the Christmas break based on reviews I read on this site, and its close proximity to public transportation. My cousin who is from LA cautioned me about the Hollywood location. Based on her safety concerns, we decided to rent a car, parked at the hotel with in and out privileges for $15/day and found it to be a great central location to all the LA sites. Everything was at our finger tips. The connecting mall which has a visitors information center, great restaurants and shops met all our needs. The rooms may not be plush by Beverly Hills standard, but the decor is retro chic and not meant to be. Most important, our room was clean, huge, and had the Hollywood Hills for a view. With the many tourists in the area and the connecting upscale mall, we didn't feel threatened by any safety concerns.

We booked this hotel through Priceline for $75.00 a night over Thanksgiving, thus we paid half of the lowest price we could find ($149) anywhere online. We were a bit unsure of how we'd be treated since we had gotten our room for such a bargain, but we were treated by the most courteous of staff from the valet to the receptionist, to the maid, and were given a very nice room with a beautiful view. Our room overlooked Hollywood Hills and it was breathtaking at night and by day you could view the Hollywood sign. When we arrived a film crew from DreamWorks was filming a scene for an upcoming movie. It was incredibly cool to be able to watch it all. The movie crew and hotel staff were very open to let us watch as long as we wanted. My son even got an autograph from the film director, Wes Craven. As far as ammenities, the workout gym is nice, however we wish there had been a sauna and jacuzzi. If there was one, we couldn't find it. The pool was outdoors, so it was too cool to enjoy that. The room was extremely nice, with beautiful furnishings. The hotel is connected to a shopping mall, which is connected to the Kodak Theater (Academy Awards) and is right in the middle of the Hollywood Walk of Fame. We had one problem, with a bar bill for liquor we never used from the in-room vending machine, but the hotel took it off our bill without any questions when we told them we had never used the vending machine, and had kept it locked. They really could not have been nicer to us. I would go back to this hotel again. I was not crazy about Hollywood itself, but since we were visiting relatives in the area, it was not the city we were there to enjoy.

What this hotel does well, it does really well - quick and friendly check-in, and a beautiful, large, airy and nicely decorated room. Good bathroom and dressing room, large TV, quiet and effective aircon and 'same day' laundry service that really was same day. The restaurant was also good for breakfast, if a little pricey.

Location was fine - handy for Universal Studios - but be aware that Hollywood is pretty seedy.

Downsides? Well the maid cleaned the room OK, ie. she dusted, vacuumed and changed the towels, but someone really ought to teach her that making a bed involves more than just ensuring the top cover looks straight. Empty mineral water bottles seemed to offend her as well, as these were left to build into quite a considerable collection by the time we left.

The bar was fine, but really would have benefited from staff with a slightly better grasp of English who knew how to smile from time to time.

Think we'd try something around Beverly Hills next time.

I am stunned by the positive reactions about this hotel. The rooms were very basic and everything that could be broken in my room, was. The phone, the TV, Internet access, and no hot water. The hotel management had every engineer in my room at one time or another and when they TWICE offered to move me to another room, I packed up and then they told me the other room had already been taken. Appallingly horrific experience, they comped my entire stay, and I will *never* stay there again. Ever.

Stayed here for a second time. A good functional hotel with friendly and professional staff.
Minor gripes: beakfast 20 minutes late on one occasion, faxes are not delivered to the room but are collected from reception, laundry not returned same day (as requested), energy-saving lighting in room too subdued making it hard to read.
Major gripe: a nasty fridge kept me awake with its whirring mechanics. Am I the only one who hates the whole idea of the hotel mini-bar? Once cigarettes were freely available; is it not time
that alcohol was made more difficult to obtain?
The bed was comfortable, the bathroom nice and modern (though steamed up too easily) and the view of the Hollywood Hills brilliant.
